Sutiyoso wants busway launch to be perfect<\/p>\n

Governor Sutiyoso has staked his reputation on the busway
\nproject, and he let the busway drivers know on Monday that he
\nexpected they would not let him down and do their part to make
\nthe project a success.<\/p>\n
\"Do not disappoint me. Show me your capabilities and maintain
\nyour image as good drivers,\" Sutiyoso told 126 busway drivers on
\nMonday at City Hall.<\/p>\n
\"Don't make any mistakes like hitting the bus shelter while
\ndriving, because the reporters behind you will immediately take
\npictures of the incident,\" he said, warning them to expect
\nintense media coverage.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said the drivers would earn a \"reasonable salary\" for
\ntheir hard work, more than made by other bus drivers.<\/p>\n
But one of the busway drivers said the promised Rp 2 million
\n(US$235) a month salary was less than what he earned driving his
\nprevious route.<\/p>\n
\"If I don't get more money, I'd just prefer to return to my old
\njob,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Four other drivers interviewed by The Jakarta Post said they
\ndidn't know what their salaries would be.<\/p>\n
Another driver even requested the media to ask Sutiyoso what
\nthe drivers' would be paid.<\/p>\n
The governor also warned the drivers to be careful while
\npassing critical points such as intersections along the corridor,
\nwhich will connect Blok M in South Jakarta and Kota in West
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Underlining the importance of the project \"as the gate to the
\nmacroscopic design of the city's transportation infrastructure\",
\nSutiyoso revealed his office would construct another 13 busway
\ncorridors.<\/p>\n
He said that everything was on schedule for next Thursday's
\nbusway opening, with all the necessary preparations near
\ncompletion.<\/p>\n
However, the Post observed on Monday that several busway
\nshelters were built some distance from where commuters normally
\nget off from the bus.<\/p>\n
Commuters who get off at the Ratu Plaza bus shelter, for
\ninstance, will have to walk about 100 meters -- plus the length
\nof the shelter's pedestrian bridge -- to the nearest traffic
\nintersection.<\/p>\n
\"Come to think of it, it will be quite a long walk if I decide
\nto get off at Ratu Plaza and then take a regular bus or a taxi to
\ncontinue my trip outside the corridor,\" said Suherman, 30, who
\nlives in Simprug, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Similarly, busway passengers who get off at the busway shelter
\nnear the Japanese Embassy will have to walk some distance to
\nreach the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.<\/p>",
