Sutiyoso waits for a 'whisper' on scam<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two senior city officials could still be
\ndismissed over their alleged involvement in the Ancol scandal if
\nfurther information came from the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office,
\nGovernor Sutiyoso said on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"We are waiting for a whisper from the prosecutor's office. If
\nthey said this (that the officials were involved), I will
\nevaluate (their positions),\" Sutiyoso told reporters after Friday
\nprayers at City Hall.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso denied that he had rejected recommendations by the
\nCity Inspectorate for all 11 officials allegedly involved in the
\nAncol affair to be punished.<\/p>\n
Though nine officials were replaced, the two most senior --
\nCity Development Agency head Bambang Sungkono and City Planning
\nAgency head Ahmaddin Ahmad -- were not.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso argued that an evaluation of the two officials should
\nnot involve their sudden replacement.<\/p>\n
Everything should be \"conducted wisely and in a good time\", he
\nsaid, while asserting that he was \"never afraid to dismiss
\nofficials\".<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, City Inspector Hendarin Ono Saleh refused to
\ncomment on suggestions that his sudden request for an early
\npension was connected to the rejection of his proposal to dismiss
\nthe two officials.<\/p>\n
Asked whether he had given up hope, Hendarin replied: \"I will
\nrepair the damages through prayer.\"<\/p>\n
According to city administration data, Hendarin, an echelon I
\nofficial, is aged 54.<\/p>\n
Government regulation 32\/1974 concerning civil servants' terms
\nstates that the echelon I and II pension age is 58, with a
\npossible extension to 60.<\/p>\n
Hendarin was the main person calling for action against the 11
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
The officials were among 45 people who took part in an
\noverseas comparative study tour last October to Japan, Australia
\nand South Africa financed by city-owned developer PT Pembangunan
\nJaya Ancol.<\/p>\n
They reportedly received a travel allowance of between
\nUS$5,000 and $10,000 each from PT Jaya Ancol, as well as a travel
\nallowance of Rp 52 million (US$5,200) each from the city budget.<\/p>\n
Three councillors reportedly also received the travel
\nallowances even though they did not make the trip.<\/p>\n
The special crime assistant at the prosecutor's office, Andi
\nSyarifuddin, said councillors would continue to be questioned
\nnext week over suspected corruption.<\/p>\n
Andi refused to mention the names of the councillors under
\nsuspicion.<\/p>\n
All councillors who joined the trip are members of council's
\nCommission D for Development Affairs. (jun)<\/p>",
