Sutiyoso to go ahead with candidacy<\/p>\n

Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, who seems undeterred by the obstacles
\nto his candidacy, signaled that, should he be elected chairman of
\nthe National Sports Council (KONI), he would leave the day-to-day
\nduties to his designated aides.<\/p>\n
\"I will appoint someone to team up with Djoko Pramono,\" he
\nsaid on the sidelines of the KONI congress here on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Djoko, who is chairman of the National Diving Association
\n(POSI), failed in his candidacy in the last election but has
\nreturned to the scene, teaming up with Sutiyoso in the race for
\nthe 2003-2007 term.<\/p>\n
\"I will set up a new KONI board with reliable members, and I
\nwill fully back them,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said he was supported by a number of sports
\norganizations and KONI's provincial chapters. However, according
\nto the seven-strong screening team, the retired three-star Army
\ngeneral has failed to meet one candidacy requirement in that he
\nhas not obtained permission from his superiors to run for the
\npost.<\/p>\n
He is one of seven candidates vying to replace the outgoing
\nWismoyo Arismunandar in the three-day congress, which began on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
The other six include Arie Sudewo, Agum Gumelar, Luhut Binsar
\nPanjaitan, Iskandar Zulkarnain, Andhy Gani Nena Wea and Oesman
\nSapta Odang.<\/p>\n
Asked why he persisted in joining the race when his position
\nas Jakarta governor entailed a hectic schedule, Sutiyoso said he
\nwas not ambitious about the sporting post.<\/p>\n
\"Only because of urging from athletes and former athletes have
\nI decided to be involved. Though I have to admit I was a bit late
\nin starting,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The National Athletes Association (IANI), which is led by
\nformer world badminton champion Icuk Sugiarto, has thrown its
\nweight behind the governor.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso spoke of his plan, if elected, to inject funds into a
\nselect number of KONI provincial chapters to develop their
\nrespective priority sports.<\/p>\n
He said that his role in the governors' association should
\nhelp him revitalize sports development on a regional level.<\/p>\n
The congress involves 50 KONI-affiliated sports organizations,
\n29 KONI provincial chapters and a number of observers.<\/p>\n
After Wismoyo's accountability speech on the second day of the
\ncongress on Wednesday, the convention will round up its session
\non Thursday with the main agenda to elect the council's new
\nchairman.<\/p>\n
The seven candidates will be discussed during a commission
\nmeeting before being brought forward to the plenary session
\nduring which their candidacy eligibility will be decided upon.<\/p>",
