Sutiyoso to be tougher against crime<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Newly appointed Jakarta Military Chief Maj. Gen.
\nSutiyoso said he would follow the path his predecessor Lt. Gen.
\nWiranto adopted in combating crime and maintaining order and
\nsecurity in the city and its surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
\"I will continue my predecessor's policies and develop them
\nfurther,\" he said at a press conference held shortly after his
\ninduction as the new Jakarta military chief yesterday.<\/p>\n
He refused to give details about his plans, but said that he
\nwas already familiar with Wiranto's anti-crime programs.<\/p>\n
He said he had been fully involved in designing the programs
\nwhile chief of staff at the military command, a post he held
\nsince January last year.<\/p>\n
\"I used to be second in charge of the programs. I will not
\ndeviate from the established policies,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso also promised he would take an even tougher stance
\nagainst crime in order to rid the city of troublemakers while it
\nprepares itself for the general election next year.<\/p>\n
Among the anti-crime programs Wiranto implemented were wars
\nagainst hoodlums, gambling and log smuggling, and the handling of
\nstudent brawls.<\/p>\n
Tens of integrated command posts, combining military and
\npolice officials have been set up to help control crime in the
\ncity, he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said that over 3,000 hoodlums, mostly unemployed
\nyouths, have been arrested in specific operations in the past.
\nMost of them had been released after undergoing a military-style
\neducation; those who failed to pass the program were brought to
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
\"In the future, hoodlums will be considered criminals and will
\nbe taken straight to court,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The new commander also called on the public to cooperate more
\nwith the police and the military. \"Without the cooperation of the
\ncommunity, including the press, we won't succeed in our efforts
\nto maintain the city's order and security,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Jakarta is prone to crimes because it is the center of
\nadministration, trade and business, and politics.<\/p>\n
\"The city's success in maintaining security and order becomes
\na standard for other provinces.<\/p>\n
\"Bear in mind that the city's inhabitants come from various
\nethnic groups, with their own cultures, languages, standards of
\nbehavior and educational backgrounds. This condition is what
\nmakes the city prone to crimes, riots and social unrest\".<\/p>\n
He said that things that happen in the city would affect the
\norder and security in other provinces as well.<\/p>\n
\"If the social and political conditions here are good, the
\nsituation in the other provinces can be expected to be secure and
\nunder control.\"<\/p>\n
Among the first items on his agenda is to hold a special
\nmeeting to evaluate the Jakarta military command's personnel and
