Sutiyoso tells Jakartans to protect themselves<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso has encouraged Jakarta
\nresidents to arm themselves and attack people attempting to
\nplunder their homes.<\/p>\n
"Don't be afraid of robbers. Don't hesitate to use weapons to
\nprotect yourselves... that's completely tolerable if it's for
\nself-defense," he said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso made the statement amid widespread rumors about the
\npossibility of fresh riots on Monday, the 53rd anniversary of
\nIndonesian Independence.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso has previously urged the public not to believe the
\nrumors. "Don't believe these rumors because they are not true,
\nbut remain vigilant nevertheless," he reiterated yesterday.<\/p>\n
Despite Sutiyoso's insistence that the rumors are baseless,
\nboth the military and police have pledged a large deployment of
\ntheir personnel to anticipate the unexpected.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said that defending and protecting one's life, family
\nand property was an unquestionable right.<\/p>\n
"Use any weapon -- clubs, spears, klewang (single-edge saber
\nwith broad, curved blade), scissors, anything -- to defend
\nyourselves because those who might come to plunder in your
\nneighborhood will certainly not come with bare hands," he told
\nresidents of Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta and Griya Agung and
\nSumur Batu in Central Jakarta when he met them during a whirlwind
\ntour of their community security programs on Thursday night.<\/p>\n
He said the program was very important to help city residents
\nfight crime.<\/p>\n
He added that women and children should also be involved in
\nthe program and should be made aware of how to deal with
\nattackers how best to protect themselves.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said the authorities, including his office, city
\npolice, the military command and the prosecutor's office, would
\nnot tolerate any rioting in the capital.<\/p>\n
"As the governor, I will not tolerate any more trouble. No
\nmore looting. No more raping," he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso encouraged women to be brave and not to hesitate
\nwounding assailants.<\/p>\n
"Fight back. Arm yourselves with anything. If the attacker
\ndies trying to rape you, you cannot be brought to court," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"There is no religion in the world which prevents us from
\ndefending ourselves when our lives are at stake," he added.<\/p>\n
City police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Sutanto, who accompanied
\nSutiyoso on the Thursday visit, also assured residents that the
\nlaw would tolerate the use of weapons in self-defense.<\/p>\n
"If your life is in danger, go ahead and defend yourself, I
\nguarantee you will not be prosecuted. Use anything you can to
\nimmobilize your assailants," he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso also reminded residents to follow the correct
\nprocedures if they intended to purchase firearms, air rifles and
\nstun guns because by law they have to be licensed by the police.<\/p>\n
"Keep in mind that carrying these weapons in public without
\nany license documents is an offense. And don't keep them if you
\ndon't know how to use them properly because then you could become
\nthe victim of your own weapon," he added. (cst)<\/p>",
