'Sutiyoso should learn from his past mistakes'<\/p>\n
Despite their criticism of Governor Sutiyoso and Deputy Governor
\nFauzi Bowo, Jakartans remain hopeful that the pair will prove
\nthem wrong and make the city a better place to live through their
\nenlightened leadership.<\/p>\n
Ndari, 24, an English teacher at an English school on Jl.
\nThamrin in Central Jakarta. She has been teaching for six years
\nand now resides in Pondok Aren, Tangerang, with her family:<\/p>\n
We cannot deny the fact that in his previous term, Governor
\nSutiyoso failed to cope with the complex problems of the city.<\/p>\n
Had he been aware of his incompetence, he would have resigned
\nfrom his post.<\/p>\n
I think most Jakartans now need a good leader who can bring
\nabout good governance. Unfortunately, the inaugurated city
\nleaders do not represent what the people need.<\/p>\n
The reelection of Sutiyoso reflects the failure of democracy,
\nas the city councillors obviously ignored the public's wishes.
\nDemocracy in Jakarta, if I may say, has deteriorated.<\/p>\n
As far as I'm concerned, if Governor Sutiyoso and Deputy
\nGovernor Fauzi Bowo are able to produce good things, they might
\ngain public sympathy. That's what I want as a city resident.<\/p>\n
Nari, 45, works at a print company in Central Jakarta. This
\nnative Jakartan lives in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, with his

I am impartial in this case, being just an ordinary person.
\nHow can I respond to what the public sees as the unfavorable
\nfacts -- that Sutiyoso was reelected as city governor.<\/p>\n
Everybody knows about his poor performance in his previous
\nterm. But as a human, he is bound to improve by learning from his
\nmistakes.<\/p>\n
I guess that the social and economic problems in the city are
\nnot solely his responsibility, but the responsibility of all the
\ncity residents. He is just the governor, not the president.<\/p>\n
What we need to do is just wait and see. We should give them a
\nchance to make good on their promises to the city residents.<\/p>\n
Edi, 45, works for a company in Central Jakarta. He recently
\nmoved from Jakarta to Depok, West Jakarta, with his children and
\nwife:<\/p>\n
Personally I can say that Governor Sutiyoso is a good leader,
\ndespite the public controversy.<\/p>\n
I know lots of people have protested against him because of
\nhis incompetence in governing the city. But that was partly due
\nto his incompetent and corrupt subordinates who failed to execute
\nhis orders properly.<\/p>\n
Besides, I don't think all the protesters really dislike him.
\nIt was just the power of money that made them stage rallies.<\/p>\n
Let's support both the leaders and encourage them to learn
\nfrom their past failures so they can perform better in the
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
Waska, 39, a part-time employee at a foreign embassy in
\nCentral Jakarta. He lives on Jl. Otto Iskandar Dinata in East
\nJakarta with his wife:<\/p>\n
As an ordinary person, I just follow what happens in society.
\nWhich is to say, I can't do anything to stop (the inauguration
\nof) Governor Sutiyoso and his deputy Fauzi. It's too hard to go
\nagainst the flow.<\/p>\n
In this light, ordinary people are like consumers who must
\naccept something regardless of their preference. Like it or not
\nwe must accept (Sutiyoso and Fauzi).<\/p>\n
In my opinion, living in the metropolitan is similar to living
\nin the jungle. The strongest person is the one who gets power.
\nThe richer a person is, the more powerful he is. That's the law.<\/p>\n
So the best thing to do is just focus and get by in our own
\nlives. That's all we can do to survive in the city.<\/p>\n
