'Sutiyoso should do something to win back public sympathy'<\/p>\n
Despite public outcry and opposition against governor-elect
\nSutiyoso, it is almost certain that he will carry out his second
\ntenure as city governor. Some residents shared their views with
\nThe Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Eka, 29, has been an environmentalist of a noted organization
\nsince 1998. She resides in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta with her
\nfamily:<\/p>\n
I personally oppose Sutiyoso as city governor. It is so
\nobvious to the public that he failed to manage the city during
\nhis previous tenure.<\/p>\n
I don't even see any policies accommodating environmental
\nissues during his term.<\/p>\n
I regret the faulty procedures during the gubernatorial
\nelection and that the city councillors had reelected him.<\/p>\n
I can only hope that he will make the city better. I won't
\nexpect too much from him to do what the public wishes due to his
\nprevious poor performance.<\/p>\n
He should learn from all the problems and make favorable
\npolicies to save the environment in the city. He alone, I'm sure,
\ncould not survive his post without the city administrative staff
\nmembers to implement his programs.<\/p>\n
City councillors who elected him should be held responsible
\nfor the governor they chose.<\/p>\n
Umar, not his real name, 42, is a vendor in a makeshift kiosk
\nselling cigarettes and beverages. He is from Kuningan, West Java
\nwhere he lives with his wife and two children. He has been living
\non Jl. Agus Salim, Central Jakarta for five years:<\/p>\n
I disagree with the reelection of Sutiyoso as city governor.
\nBut we cannot deny that he was reelected. It's also a fact that
\npeople oppose him.<\/p>\n
I think he should do something to win public support by
\nfocusing on street vendors like me. We realize that we're wrong
\naccording to the city bylaw. But there is no other way to survive
\nin the city.<\/p>\n
In my opinion, street vendors should be localized and managed
\nso that we will feel secure and not be extorted by officers from
\nthe city public order. Then we would be very happy to pay taxes
\nor other levies to the city administration.<\/p>\n
What is happening now is that we're still prone to forcible
\neviction despite the fact that we've paid our financial
\nobligations to certain officers. We understand that corrupt
\nofficials in the city continue to operate here. That's why
\nvendors' pleas have not been heard. Worse still, we feel
\nthreatened.<\/p>\n
Could Governor Sutiyoso have the city officials side with the
\nsocially disadvantaged?<\/p>\n
Hadi is an activist of a non-governmental organization. He
\nused to live in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, but now lives in Depok,
\nWest Java, with his only daughter and wife:<\/p>\n
I would prefer that Sutiyoso was not city governor. He has had
\ntoo many failures to show us his incompetence. I regret that the
\npublic's will has been neglected and that he was reelected
\ndespite the irregularities that surfaced in the gubernatorial
\nelection.<\/p>\n
I just hope that he is aware that most people in the city have
\na low income or are unemployed.<\/p>\n
In addition, the worsening traffic congestion should also be
\nhis top priority as the Jakarta governor.<\/p>\n
I don't think it's easy to raise Sutiyoso's awareness. Perhaps
\nSutiyoso, his subordinates and the city councillors need a lot of
\nrallies protesting them to make them become aware of the real
\nconditions in the city.<\/p>\n
I'm pessimistic that the city government will get better due
\nto their prolonged practices in corruption.<\/p>",
