Sutiyoso not serious about KONI race<\/p>\n

Despite being nominated as one of the candidates to lead the
\nNational Sports Council (KONI), Governor Sutiyoso took a
\nwait-and-see stance, saying he would like to focus on his duties
\nin running the capital city first.<\/p>\n
KONI's Jakarta chapter nominated Sutiyoso on Thursday, saying
\nthat he had been a successful administrator in the three sports
\nfor which he had been responsible.<\/p>\n
\"I think I must concentrate on my duties as governor first
\ninstead of looking for another post. It would be better if the
\nsporting community could find another candidate,\" he said at City
\nHall on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"Besides, my achievements in two sports do not automatically
\nmean that I am suitable to lead KONI.\"<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso is currently chairman of the Indonesian Basketball
\nAssociation (Perbasi) and former chairman of the Indonesian
\nTarget Shooting and Hunting Association (Perbakin). He is also
\nthe patron of Jakarta-based Persija soccer club.<\/p>\n
Indonesian women shooters contributed three gold medals, while
\nthe men's basketball team won the silver medal at the Kuala
\nLumpur 2001 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, losing to the
\nPhilippines in the final.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Persija grabbed the Indonesian Soccer League title
\nin the same year after defeating PSM from Makassar, South
\nSulawesi.<\/p>\n
In his duties as governor, already into his second term,
\nSutiyoso faces several major problems, including imminent
\nflooding threats, riverbank squatter housing, recalcitrant street
\nvendors and widespread corruption within his administration.<\/p>\n
Current chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar will end his term at a
\nnational congress this year, after having been in the driving
\nseat for two terms. KONI's constitution stipulates that a
\nchairman can serve a maximum of only two terms.<\/p>\n
KONI is slated to hold its congress here from Feb. 24 through
\nFeb. 27, with participation from its provincial chapters
\nnationwide, as well as officials from 50 affiliated sports
\norganizations.<\/p>\n
Currently, four names have made public their candidacy or have
\nbeen nominated by sporting organizations or KONI provincial
\nchapters.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) Agum
\nGumelar is believed to be the strongest contender, considering
\nhis current position as Minister of Transportation.<\/p>\n
One of KONI's deputy chairman, Arie Sudewo, is also being
\nnominated for the position, as well as chairman of the Indonesian
\nKarate-do Federation (FORKI) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.<\/p>\n
While three of the candidates, as well as Wismoyo, are retired
\nArmy generals, Indra Djati Sidi is the only one from a civilian
\nbackround.<\/p>\n
Indra currently serves as KONI's deputy chairman as well being
\na director general at the Ministry of National Education.<\/p>",
