Sutiyoso nominated by all three parties<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso
\nhas been nominated by the three political parties' City Council
\nfactions to be Jakarta's governor from 1997 to 2002.<\/p>\n
The ruling Golkar, the United Development Party (PPP) and
\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI) all put the two-star general at
\nthe top of their lists of nominees which were submitted to the
\nCity Council yesterday.<\/p>\n
While Golkar has only Sutiyoso on its list, the other two
\nparties put two other names on their papers, Deputy Governor of
\nEconomic and Development Affairs Tb.M. Rais and City Secretary
\nHarun Al Rasyid.<\/p>\n
The factions' candidates will be discussed this month by the
\nCity Council before their names are officially proposed to the
\ncentral government as candidates for Jakarta's next governor.<\/p>\n
The nominees, at least three and up to five people, will be
\nconsidered by the minister of home affairs. The successful
\ncandidate will then have to receive the President's approval
\nbefore officially being installed on Oct. 6.<\/p>\n
According to the chairman of the PPP faction, Achmad Suaidy,
\nhis faction consulted with their city chapter office before
\nproposing the three candidates.<\/p>\n
\"We include Rais on our list because the council has not yet
\nofficially accepted his refusal to be nominated as reported
\nrecently in the media,\" Suaidy said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Before officially submitting the factions' nominees to the
\nMinistry of Home Affairs, the council will ask the candidates if
\nthey are willing to be governor.<\/p>\n
Rais said in June that he did not want to be elected as the
\ncapital's next governor.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the Armed Forces faction, Sumekar K.W., said
\nyesterday that his faction would announce its nominees in the
\nnext few days but declined to disclose the names. (ste)<\/p>",
