Sutiyoso launches Rp 63.4b project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso launched on Thursday a Rp 63.4
\nbillion (US$7.46 million) integrated project to reduce poverty
\nand develop slum areas in the city's 15 subdistricts.<\/p>\n
\"This is a new approach in alleviating poverty and developing
\nthe city's slum areas, as all related city agencies are focusing
\ntheir projects on a specific area,\" Sutiyoso said at the
\nproject's launching ceremony in Manggarai, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Previously, each agency ran projects in separate areas, which
\nmade it difficult to get the whole picture of the development
\nprograms in those areas,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The governor said each subdistrict would benefit from the
\nprojects, which will include improving housing and public
\ntoilets, as well as supporting economic activities.<\/p>\n
Galur, Karang Anyar, and Petojo subdistricts, in Central
\nJakarta received more than Rp 10.7 billion; Tanjung Priok,
\nPapanggo and Cilincing subdistricts in North Jakarta received
\nmore than Rp 17.6 billion; and Kapuk, Kamal and Tegal Alur
\nsubdistricts in West Jakarta received more than Rp 15.1 billion.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Manggarai, Pasar Manggis and North Kebayoran Lama
\nsubdistricts in South Jakarta received more than Rp 9.8 billion
\nand Kampung Melayu, Rawa Bunga and North Cipinang Besar
\nsubdistricts in East Jakarta received more than Rp 9.3 billion.<\/p>\n
The funds were allocated according to the differing needs of
\nthe subdistricts.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, the city administration launched the
\nscheme's pilot project in Kalibaru subdistrict, North Jakarta, at
\na cost of Rp 1.4 billion.<\/p>\n
\"The integrated scheme allows for the involvement of local
\nnongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to develop the residents'
\nsense of belonging of the projects,\" the governor said.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Mayor Abdul Mufti said there were three NGOs for
\neach subdistrict.<\/p>\n
\"We have adopted a community-based development approach to
\novercome the problems by allowing the community to come up with
\ntheir own projects.<\/p>\n
\"We are giving them the freedom to actively participate in the
\nprojects, from the planning to the control stages,\" he told the
\ngovernor in a prepared speech.<\/p>\n
The governor then inspected the neighborhood while chatting
\nwith residents.<\/p>\n
\"I hope the people here will stop quarreling with each other;
\notherwise all development programs will be useless,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Besides, I won't visit this place anymore,\" he said, before
\nasking whether any of his predecessors had visited the
\nneighborhood.<\/p>\n
Those present said that he was the first governor to visit
\ntheir kampong. Before Sutiyoso left, he had his picture taken
