Sutiyoso 'extends' his term by 25 days<\/p>\n

Sutiyoso must really enjoy being governor, since he reported to
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri that his term concludes on Oct.
\n31, or 25 days later than it actually ends.<\/p>\n
City Council chairman Edy Waluyo questioned on Wednesday this
\ndiscrepancy, which occurred in a recent report from Sutiyoso to
\nthe President.<\/p>\n
\"Sutiyoso's term should end on Oct. 6 this year, since he was
\ninstalled on the same date in 1997,\" Edy said at City Hall.<\/p>\n
He asked the governor to explain why he told the President his
\nterm ended on Oct. 31, but said he did not believe there was a
\npolitical motive behind the incident.<\/p>\n
In his report to President Megawati on May 15, Sutiyoso said
\nthat his tenure concluded on Oct. 31.<\/p>\n
According the government regulations, a governor must issue a
\nreport informing the president that his or her tenure is ending,
\nat least six months before it does end.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso looked surprised when reporters asked him about the
\nmatter on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"I will check it. The report was checked by 10 people before
\nit was sent,\" he said.<\/p>\n
City administration spokesman Muhayat said the matter was just
\na technical error.<\/p>\n
\"I will check it. It has been checked by at least four
\npeople,\" Muhayat said.<\/p>\n
But the discrepancy led to speculation that this \"25-day
\nextension\" of Sutiyoso's term was related to the gubernatorial
\nelection in October.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso has already said that he is willing to be reelected
\nto a second five-year term if the people want him.<\/p>\n
The governor's annual budget speech was approved by the City
\nCouncil last month, opening the way for Sutiyoso to stand in the
\nelection.<\/p>\n
There are rumors that Sutiyoso has been making moves to
\nsidetrack any potential competitors in the October election,
\nincluding Edy Waluyo, City Secretary Fauzi Bowo and the City
\nCouncil's deputy chairman, Tarmidi Suhardjo.<\/p>\n
Edy also said on Wednesday that the council had approved
\nSutiyoso's request to move back his final accountability speech
\nfrom June to the end of July.<\/p>\n
This accountability speech is vital because if it is rejected
\nby the council, Sutiyoso would be blocked from reelection.<\/p>\n
The election will be determined by the council's 83
\ncouncillors. The largest party, the Indonesian Democratic Party
\nof Struggle, which has 30 seats in the council, will play a
\nsignificant role in the election.<\/p>\n
The party earlier announced it would nominate party city
\nchapter chairman Tarmidi and party central board deputy chairman
\nRoy BB Janis.<\/p>",
