Sutiyoso briefs diplomats<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In an effort to boost foreign investment in the
\ncapital, Governor Sutiyoso told 24 new Indonesian diplomats on
\nWednesday to help cultivate a positive image of Jakarta among the
\ninternational community.<\/p>\n
\"Jakarta, as in other parts of the country, really needs
\nforeign investment to help the economic recovery,\" he told the
\ndiplomats at City Hall.<\/p>\n
The diplomats are undergoing an orientation program before
\ndeparting for their respective destinations. Those included in
\nthe program are 10 ambassadors, one charge d'affaires, six consul
\ngenerals and seven deputy chefs de mission.<\/p>\n
The governor emphasized the importance of creating an image of
\nJakarta as a safe city that is favorable for investment.<\/p>\n
\"The problem is that we will always deal with residents
\nworking as street vendors and becak (pedicab) drivers.<\/p>\n
\"Yet the city administration will continue to uphold public
\norder with new approaches to minimize conflict with residents,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso recalled that several foreign ambassadors had met
\nwith him and threatened to leave the capital if security was not
\nimproved following the May 1998 riots.<\/p>\n
The governor said he was confident Jakarta could attract
\ninvestors and tourists if their security was guaranteed.<\/p>\n
\"We can promote Jakarta as long as we can improve the
\nsituation here,\" he said, adding the diplomats could also help
\npromote the sister-city program in the cities in which they will
\nreside.<\/p>\n
The diplomats are slated to leave Indonesia by the end of
\nApril. Among them are East Timor prointegration leader F.X. Lopez
\nda Cruz, who will serve as an ambassador to Greece; former Air
\nForce chief of staff Air Marshall (ret) Sutria Tubagus, who will
\nserve as an ambassador to Thailand; and former president
\nSoeharto's English translator, Widodo Sutiyo, who will be
\ndispatched to serve as an ambassador to the Vatican. (nvn)<\/p>",
