Sutiyoso bars bomb squad from combing his office<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The bomb squad which was deployed to City Hall
\nafter someone called in a bomb threat to the building was barred
\nfrom entering Governor Sutiyoso's office.<\/p>\n
"Yes, I did not allow them to comb my office simply because
\nthere are lots of confidential documents (in there) which should
\nbe seen only by myself," the governor said.<\/p>\n
The governor said the bomb threat, which proved to be a hoax,
\ndid not worry him. "I'm familiar with so many kinds of threats,"
\nsaid the retired three-star Army general.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso added that he checked his own office in the Balai
\nAgung (Grand Hall) building, located next to the 21-story City
\nHall on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan, which is also home to the U.S.
\nEmbassy.<\/p>\n
The bomb threat was received at about 10:30 a.m. by Askia, a
\nwoman employed on 10th floor of the building. A male voice told
\nher a bomb had been placed in City Hall.<\/p>\n
Senior staffer Raya Siahaan said the building's security
\nofficers then contacted the Central Jakarta Police and informed
\nthem of the bomb threat.<\/p>\n
About two hours later, the bomb squad arrived and ordered
\nthose who were still in their offices to evacuate the building
\nwhile they searched the area.<\/p>\n
Apparently confident the bomb threat was a hoax, the employees
\ncalmly left their offices and took the elevators and emergency
\nstairs down to the lobby.<\/p>\n
The bomb squad's search of the building lasted until late in
\nthe afternoon, meaning most of those employed in the building
\nwere late getting home.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said bomb hoaxes had become a new trend in the
\ncapital. "It's a terror which has been designed to scare the
\npublic.<\/p>\n
"But it (the bomb hoax at City Hall) could also be aimed at
\nattempting to influence my position," the governor said. "And it
\ncould also be the work of somebody who did it simply for fun."<\/p>\n
Since the blast in the basement parking lot of the 34-story
\nJakarta Stock Exchange building in South Jakarta, the city has
\nbeen plagued by numerous bomb hoaxes called in by unidentified
\nparties.<\/p>\n
The explosion at the Jakarta Stock Exchange building last
\nWednesday at 3:17 p.m. was not preceded by a phoned in threat,
\nthough the building's power supply was turned on and off several
\ntimes before the blast.<\/p>\n
Separately, a top officer of the National Police Forensic
\nLaboratory (Puslabfor) said on Monday that RDX, considered the
\nmost powerful and brisant of military explosives, was found in
\nthe remnants left after the explosion in the JSX building.<\/p>\n
"Most of the debris from the explosion was swept away in the
\nflood of water caused by the explosion in the parking lot. The
\nremnants we found useful were the ones found in the bombed van,"
\nthe officer who requested anonymity told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
"We used gas chromatography to break up the chemical
\ncomponents (of the remnants) and found, RDX."<\/p>\n
RDX, a white crystalline powder in pure form with the chemical
\nname cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, has a high degree of
\nstability in storage.<\/p>\n
It is mixed with a polymer like polyurethane to make it doughy
\nand stretchable, and can be mixed in varying proportions with
\nother explosives, like TNT (trinitrotoluene), for specified
\ntasks, the officer said.<\/p>\n
He added that the most deadly and popular variations of the
\nexplosive are "composition C-1 to composition C-3" which contain
\n80 percent RDX.<\/p>\n
"It is much, much deadlier than TNT. Five kilograms of RDX is
\nequivalent to some 20 kilograms of TNT," the officer said.<\/p>\n
The explosive, which can be easily mistaken for plasticine,
\ncan be molded into the interiors of pens, letters, cigarette
