Sutanto, new head of narcotics agency<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has named Insp. Gen.
\nSuntanto to head the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), a post that
\nwill make him a three-star police general.<\/p>\n
The promotion will increase the chances of Sutanto, known for
\nhis clean track record, to be selected as the new national police
\nchief in the upcoming reshuffle currently being prepared by the
\nPresident.<\/p>\n
National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar confirmed on Tuesday
\nthe appointment of Sutanto, the outgoing head of the national
\npolice education and training center.<\/p>\n
Sutanto will replace Comr. Gen. Makbul Padmanegara, who is to
\nbe assigned as a high-ranking officer within the National Police
\nHeadquarters, although sources say that he will later be
\nappointed as the new chief of detectives, replacing Comr. Gen.
\nSuyitno Landung.<\/p>\n
With a new rank and position, the likelihood of Sutanto
\nbecoming the next police chief is stronger and insiders say
\nSutanto is Susilo's favorite for the job. Susilo is a retired
\narmy general, who graduated in the same year as Sutanto in 1973.<\/p>\n
Da'i, however, dismissed speculation that Sutanto's promotion
\nwas a prelude to him being promoted to the top post.<\/p>\n
Other candidates for the national police chief post include
\nDeputy National Police chief Comr. Gen. Adang Dorodjatun, Comr.
\nGen. Makbul Padmanegara and deputy chief of detectives Insp. Gen.
\nDadang Garnida.<\/p>\n
\"Everyone has a chance to become the new police chief. I have
\nsaid before that not only three-star generals are eligible for
\nthe position, even one-star generals could be nominated,\" Da'i
\nsaid, but added that the President has yet to request for the
\nlist of candidates for the new police chief.<\/p>",
