Suspects named in Kontras attack<\/p>\n

Three suspects have been named in the attack on the office of the
\nCommission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras),
\ncity police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo said over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The three suspects, members of nationalistic and pro-military
\nyouth group Pemuda Panca Marga (PPM), were charged after police
\nquestioned 15 witnesses and collected sufficient evidence, said
\nPrasetyo.<\/p>\n
He declined to reveal the suspects' names, saying that the
\npolice were still investigating the case. The three men are being
\nheld at the Central Jakarta Police station.<\/p>\n
\"The number of suspects and witnesses could increase,
\ndepending on how the investigation unfolds,\" Prasetyo said after
\ntaking part on Saturday in a discussion on violence, particularly
\nagainst the Kontras office.<\/p>\n
Prasetyo said the three suspects denied that the attacks had
\nbeen deliberately planned, saying that they became angry after
\nthey could not find Munir, the former chairman of Kontras who is
\nknown to be outspoken and critical of the military and the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Kontras coordinator Ori Rachman demanded that the
\ncity police focus the probe on finding the masterminds behind the
\nattack.<\/p>\n
\"Capturing the masterminds would be the most effective way to
\nprevent similar attacks from happening again,\" said Ori after the
\ndiscussion.<\/p>\n
Kontras, which has been critical of the military and the
\ngovernment, has been the target of attacks since 2000, when a
\ngrenade exploded in front of the Kontras office in Central
\nJakarta. This was followed by a string of other attacks,
\nincluding one by a mob in 2002, in which office furniture and
\nfiles were destroyed.<\/p>\n
The latest attack occurred last Tuesday, when about 100
\nmembers of the PPM, clad in military fatigues, attacked the
\noffice and assaulted five staff members for voicing criticisms
\nagainst the war in Aceh.<\/p>",
