        "content": "<p>Suspects in UNHCR attack and Eurico to be tried<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Six suspects in the September mob attack on the<br>\nUN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Atambua, East<br>\nNusa Tenggara, and prointegration militia leader Eurico Guterres<br>\nwill soon be tried, according to an official.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman for the Attorney General&apos;s Office, Muljohardjo,<br>\nsaid on Wednesday prosecutors in East Nusa Tenggara had submitted<br>\nto the Jakarta Prosecutor&apos;s Office two dossiers on the mob<br>\nattack, and another one on Eurico, who will be charged with<br>\ninstigating a crime.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The state prosecutors received the dossiers on Wednesday and<br>\nwill soon file the cases with the North Jakarta District Court.<br>\nThe six suspects have been detained at Salemba prison in Central<br>\nJakarta since Tuesday evening,&quot; Muljohardjo said during a media<br>\nconference.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the suspects -- Xisto Pareira, Serapim Jimenez and<br>\nJoao Markin -- will be charged with violating Article 170 of the<br>\nCriminal Code. The article carries a maximum punishment of 12<br>\nyears imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>The three other suspects -- Julius Naesama, Jose Fransisco and<br>\nJoao Alves da Cruis -- will also be charged under Article 170, as<br>\nwell as Article 351, Paragraph 3 for assault, which carries a<br>\nmaximum punishment of seven years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Julius, Jose and Joao also will be charged with violating<br>\nEmergency Law No. 12\/1951 on the possession of firearms.<\/p>\n<p>Eurico, who is currently being detained at a house in the<br>\nJakarta Police Headquarters compound, will be charged with<br>\nviolations of Article 160 of the Criminal Code for instigating a<br>\ncrime against the government, and Article 214 for a forceful and<br>\nbelligerent act.<\/p>\n<p>Guterres allegedly ordered his followers to take back weapons<br>\nthey had handed over to the police.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Marzuki Darusman said on Wednesday the trials<br>\nwould be held in Jakarta rather than Atambua because of security<br>\nconcerns.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We need to ensure nothing disrupts these trials,&quot; he said<br>\nafter installing Bachtiar Fachri Nasution as the new deputy<br>\nattorney for special crimes. Bachtiar replaces Ramelan, who was<br>\nmoved to the office&apos;s expert staff.<\/p>\n<p>The six East Timorese militia members were transported by East<br>\nNusa Tenggara provincial authorities to Jakarta aboard a<br>\ncommercial flight on Tuesday, accompanied by personnel from the<br>\nprovincial police and prosecutor&apos;s office.<\/p>\n<p>They were taken directly to Salemba prison upon their arrival<br>\nin Jakarta at about 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 6, a mob attacked the UN humanitarian aid office,<br>\nlocated about 25 kilometers from the border with East Timor,<br>\nkilling three of the agency&apos;s workers.<\/p>\n<p>The incident was believed to have been triggered by the death<br>\nof Olivio Mendoza Moruk, a former militia leader, a day earlier.<br>\nMoruk was one of 23 suspects named by the Attorney General&apos;s<br>\nOffice for human rights violations in East Timor last year.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council responded to the incident by issuing a<br>\nresolution calling on Jakarta to disarm and disband the militias<br>\nin West Timor, and to bring those responsible for the attack to<br>\njustice.<\/p>\n<p>A delegation of the UN Security Council recently visited East<br>\nNusa Tenggara, which is now sheltering some 120,000 East Timorese<br>\nrefugees who fled the territory soon after the self-determination<br>\nreferendum there, whose results favored the proindependence camp.<br>\n(02\/bby)<\/p>",
