The Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Agency\n(Bareskrim Polri) has officially transferred the case files regarding\nenvironmental violations committed by PT TBS, which caused flooding and\nlandslides in Sumatra, to the Prosecutor\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
The Director of Specific Crimes at Bareskrim Polri, Brigadier General\nMoh Irhamni, stated that the case involves two individual perpetrators\nand the corporation PT TBS, all of whom have been named as suspects.<\/p>\n
He noted that the transfer of suspects and evidence, known as Phase\nII, was completed to the Sibolga District Attorney\u2019s Office in North\nSumatra last Friday (28\/8).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe suspects are PT TBS, the Director of PT TBS with the initials\nNC, and the Manager of PT TBS with the initials FH. The evidence\ntransferred includes two excavators, one bulldozer, and several\ncorporate documents,\u201d he said in a written statement on Thursday\n(10\/9).<\/p>\n
He explained that the perpetrators\u2019 logging activities took place in\nthe Batang Toru District, South Tapanuli, and the Sibabangun District,\nCentral Tapanuli.<\/p>\n
Irhamni mentioned that the suspects are charged under Article 109\nletter a and\/or Article 98 and\/or Article 99 of Law Number 32 of 2009\nconcerning Environmental Protection and Management.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn accordance with the directives of President Prabowo Subianto, we\nwill take firm action against perpetrators of environmental violations\nthat harm the community,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
Previously, Irhamni stated that the agency has commenced\ninvestigations regarding the discovery of timber in the Garoga and\nAnggoli River Basins in Tapanuli.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are applying charges for environmental crimes, as well as money\nlaundering, and will pursue both individual and corporate\naccountability,\u201d he told reporters at Barescroim Polri on Tuesday, 16\nDecember.<\/p>\n
In this case, Irhamni stated that the logs are suspected to have\noriginated from land clearing activities conducted by PT TBS in the\nTapanuli region, North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
He noted that the company allegedly failed to comply with the\nEnvironmental Management Effort and Environmental Monitoring Effort\n(UKL-UPL) during land clearing. Irhamni stated that the land clearing\nactivities are suspected to have been ongoing for approximately one\nyear.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the information, it has been ongoing for about a year.\nHowever, we are examining the evidence, including documents and\nplanning, for further verification,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he stated that investigators would not rule out the\npossibility of investigating other companies suspected of participating\nin land clearing upstream of the Aek Garoga River.<\/p>\n
