'Suspects in Juanda shooting used FN pistols'<\/p>\n

Police revealed on Monday that the four suspects in
\nthe bloody shooting on Jl. Juanda in Central Jakarta used FN
\npistols which are generally used by military personnel, but
\npolice are still unsure about the motive and identity of the
\nsuspects.<\/p>\n
"From our investigation, we found that the suspects used FN-
\ntype pistols that are usually owned by military personnel. But,
\nthat doesn't necessarily mean that the suspects have links (to
\nthe military)," said Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul
\nPadmanagara on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Makbul admitted that the motive for the shooting was still
\nunclear though police suspect that it was related to a previous
\nincident in which four passengers of a Mazda Cronos sedan
\nquarreled with Solihin, a parking attendant who is one of the
\nvictims.<\/p>\n
Three people were shot dead and two others injured in broad
\ndaylight in Monday's shooting. They were identified as Solihin, a
\nparking attendant, Mochtar, a security guard, and Bambang, a
\ndriver, who were standing by the roadside when four men opened
\nfire at about 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
Solihin died instantly from a gunshot wound to the stomach,
\nwhile Mochtar was shot in the head and Bambang in the chest.<\/p>\n
Makbul admitted that the police had not anticipated the
\nincident that occurred only hundreds of meters from the tightly
\nguarded presidential palace.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Andi Chaeruddin
\nsaid police were still hunting the suspects.<\/p>\n
"We have identified the suspect's car," Andi said.<\/p>\n
Andi confirmed that the four suspects in the shooting rode two
\nRX King motorcycles.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Makbul and Andi briefed reporters on the progress
\nof the investigation into the grenade explosion that occurred
\nclose to a property of the United States government on Jl. Teluk
\nBetung, Central Jakarta that claimed the life of the suspect,
\nAbdul Azis.<\/p>\n
During the briefing, Makbul revealed that conflicting
\nstatements between senior police officials were related to
\ndevelopments in the evidence found by police at the scene of the
\ncrime.<\/p>\n
"Right after the blast, amid strong rumors about threats to
\nthe U.S. Embassy as well its properties here, and the confusing
\nstatement of Yusuf, one of the suspects, we concluded that the
\nassault was likely meant to blow up the U.S.-owned property,"
\nsaid Makbul.<\/p>\n
However, Makbul said the evidence found at the scene and
\nstatements from the suspects, had led to motives related to a
\ndebt repayment.<\/p>\n
Shortly after the grenade blast, National Police chief Gen.
\nDa'i Bachtiar revealed that the abortive grenade attack was meant
\nto blow up the U.S.-owned building. However, later Makbul
\ncorrected Da'i's statement, saying that the attack was related to
\na debt payment.<\/p>\n
The case now implicates two businessmen Hasjim Setiono and
\nJuanda Lesmana in which the former owed the latter some
\nUS$400,000.<\/p>\n
"However, although the facts lead to a common case of debt
\nrepayment, we are still open to theories about other motives as
\nwe are tracking down other suspects in the grenade attack," said
\nMakbul referring to two suspects, Tata and Lili who are still at
\nlarge.<\/p>",
