Suspected pedophile and murderer stand trial<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The trial of a man accused of sodomizing and
\nmurdering six street children began yesterday at the Central
\nJakarta District Court.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Suriansyah charged the defendant, identified only
\nas SW alias Robot Gedek, 33, with sexually assaulting six minors
\naged 11 to 15, and then strangling them with plastic ropes.<\/p>\n
The defendant, described by the prosecutor as uneducated,
\nhomeless and unemployed, mutilated the victims' hands and feet
\nafter murdering them.<\/p>\n
Three of the boys were identified as Wisnu Ibnu Pranoto, 13,
\nAdri Rionaldo P. Simamora, 15 and Abdul Rosyid, 12. The other
\nthree boys were not identified.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said the precise date of the murders could not
\nbe determined; the boys' bodies were found between September 1995
\nand August 1996.<\/p>\n
Police arrested the defendant in Tegal, Central Java, on Aug.
\n5 last year. He is from Pekalongan, also in Central Java.<\/p>\n
The forensic science laboratory of the University of Indonesia
\nconfirmed the boys had been sexually assaulted.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said before sodomizing the boys, the defendant
\ninvited them to have fun with him at various entertainment
\ncenters, such as the Ancol Dreamland Park or at electronic game
\narcades.<\/p>\n
"The defendant gave Adri Rp 1,000 to please the boy,"
\nSuriansyah said.<\/p>\n
He then sexually assaulted the boys in the Senen market area,
\nCentral Jakarta, Suriansyah said.<\/p>\n
"Abdul Rosyid was sexually assaulted in the Khemon food stall
\non the third floor of Senen market's third block. The defendant
\nstrangled the boys until they choked to death," he said.<\/p>\n
All the murders occurred in the defunct Kemayoran airport in
\nCentral Jakarta, the prosecutor said.<\/p>\n
"Sometimes the defendant would give the boys something to eat
\nbefore strangling them from behind," he said.<\/p>\n
Suriansyah said the defendant then cut open the boy's belly.<\/p>\n
According the Criminal Code (Article 340), the defendant could
\nface the death penalty.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor also charged the defendant with sexually
\nassaulting minors, carrying a maximum sentence of five years
\nimprisonment.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Suriansyah said the defendants' friend, identified
\nonly as SN alias Babeh, witnessed the murder of Wisnu, one of the
\nvictims.<\/p>\n
Police said last August they had found 10 bodies of teenagers
\nin Jakarta and Central Java. Six of these were boys allegedly
\nkilled by Robot.<\/p>\n
Police have yet to conclude who murdered the other four boys,
\neven though Robot has confessed to killing all 12.<\/p>\n
During the hearing, the defendant appeared restless but calm.
\nHe drummed his fingers on his lap and tapped his feet on the
\nfloor.<\/p>\n
Lawyers for the defendant Febry Irmansyah and Nadjab Khan said
\noutside the court Robot seemed mentally unwell. They have not yet
\nsaid if they will enter a plea of insanity for their client.<\/p>\n
"He always answers 'yes' when people ask about the murder,"
\nFebry said.<\/p>\n
Presiding Judge Sartono adjourned the hearing until next week.
