Susilo's first speech delivered at Palace<\/p>\n
Prior to his inauguration President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono must
\nhave expected that he would deliver his inaugural speech before
\nmembers of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and scores of
\nforeign leaders who attended his swearing-in ceremony.<\/p>\n
Learning that the outgoing president Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nwould not attend the ceremony, political factions at the Assembly
\nthen decided that Susilo would not be allotted time to deliver an
\naddress.<\/p>\n
Assembly Speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid argued that Susilo was
\ndirectly elected by the people, therefore, did not have to
\naddress members of the MPR.<\/p>\n
Susilo finally delivered his much-anticipated speech later in
\nthe afternoon at the State Palace before journalists from local
\nand foreign media, who were sitting or standing on the carpet.<\/p>\n
\"I had prepared this speech to be read after my inauguration,
\naccording to political tradition ... But I deferred because I
\nhonor the decision made by the People's Consultative Assembly,\"
\nSusilo said before delivering his maiden speech.<\/p>\n
Susilo apparently made a slight change in the draft of his
\nspeech, as it said \"my fellow countrymen\", instead of \"Assembly
\nmembers\" and \"honorary guests\". -- JP<\/p>",
