Susilo quits as top security minister<\/p>\n
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has finally decided to quit as
\ncoordinating minister for political and security affairs. He
\nsent President Megawati Soekarnoputri his letter of resignation
\non Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
However, the President's response to Susilo's resignation from
\nthe cabinet is still unclear.<\/p>\n
To most of us, Susilo's exit came as no major surprise. News
\non the row between Megawati and Susilo had spread over the past
\nfew days.<\/p>\n
Realizing he had been sidelined from the cabinet, Susilo wrote
\nthe president a letter, seeking clarification of his duties and
\nresponsibilities as the top security minister. He also asked for
\ntime to meet with the President to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n
Megawati did not respond to the letter until Thursday. In
\nlight of that, most people would accept the action Susilo ended
\nup taking -- resigning from his post.<\/p>\n
It is worth noting that ministers of the Megawati-Hamzah Haz
\ngovernment are members of the current coalition or Mutual-Self-
\nHelp (Gotong Royong) Cabinet. Although Megawati had the
\nprerogative to chose any ministers she liked, she appointed her
\nministers based on this principal. This rainbow cabinet means
\nministers were chosen not only from among professionals but also
\nfrom among political party leaders and members.<\/p>\n
As such, it is likely that ministers will continue to emerge
\nas contenders for the presidency and vice presidency in the
