Susilo most popular candidate: Poll<\/p>\n

After the results of independent polls were announced, rival
\npoliticians acknowledged on Monday the popularity of presidential
\ncandidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his running mate Jusuf
\nKalla.<\/p>\n
A survey conducted by the Democracy Study Institute (LKaDe),
\nan institute founded by the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI-P) politicians, revealed that Susilo and Kalla were
\npopular among 45.17 percent of respondents, with Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri and Hasyim Muzadi a distant second with 18.88
\npercent.<\/p>\n
Megawati, the incumbent President, chairs PDI-P. She is
\nseeking a full five-year mandate in the July 5 presidential
\nelection following her party's poor performance in the
\nlegislative election.<\/p>\n
The survey was conducted on 1,833 respondents in 15 cities
\nacross Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Bali, between June
\n27 and June 29. The polling used stratified random sampling and a
\ndeep interview method with a margin of error of 2 percent.<\/p>\n
\"The popularity of Susilo and Kalla showed in almost all of
\nthe cities,\" LKaDe chairman Sukowaluyo Mintohardjo told a press
\nconference. PDI-P politicians, Arifin Panigoro, Didi Supriyanto
\nand Tumbu Saraswati were also in attendance.<\/p>\n
Trailing Megawati were Amien Rais and Siswono Yudohusodo with
\n15.81 percent, followed by Wiranto and Solahuddin Wahid with
\n12.95 percent and Hamzah Haz and Agum Gumelar with 4.7 percent.<\/p>\n
The Susilo-Kalla ticket also emerged the runaway leader in
\nprevious surveys.<\/p>\n
The breakdown of the poll conducted by the LKaDe also saw
\nSusilo and Kalla, who are running under the Democratic Party, top
\nthe standings.<\/p>\n
Most women (50,33 percent) chose Susilo and Kalla, compared to
\n14.3 percent which went to Megawati.<\/p>\n
\"This proves there is no gender correlation between women
\nvoters and female candidates,\" Sukowaluyo said.<\/p>\n
Susilo and Kalla were also popular among new voters, as they
\nwere chosen by 50.88 percent of respondents aged between 17 and
\n25. Amien and Siswono came second with 17.29 percent, ahead of
\nMegawati and Hasyim with 15.54 percent.<\/p>\n
Religious communities also put their trust in Susilo and
\nKalla. The LKaDe poll found 44.05 percent of Muslim voters were
\nin favor of Susilo and Kalla, far above duo Amien and Siswono who
\ngained 18.51 percent. Megawati and Hasyim came third with 14.8
\npercent, slightly ahead of Wiranto and Solahuddin with 14.45
\npercent and Hamzah and Agum with 5.64 percent.<\/p>\n
\"Although Hasyim and Solahuddin hail from the country's
\nlargest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama and Amien from the
\ncountry's second largest Muslim organization Muhammadiyah, people
\nstill prefer Susilo,\" Sukowaluyo said.<\/p>\n
Susilo and Kalla were the favorites among Catholics (50.86
\npercent), Protestants (50 percent), Hindus (50.98 percent,
\nBuddhists (47.73 percent) and Confucianists (46.67 percent).<\/p>\n
The poll also revealed Susilo and Kalla have won the hearts of
\n41.92 percent of civil servants, 41.86 percent of farmers, 54.31
\npercent of students and 54.31 percent of housewives.<\/p>\n
Although Susilo's party only garnered 7.5 percent of the vote
\nin the April 5 legislative election, Susilo looks set to win the
\npresidential race, thanks to support from 44.57 percent of Golkar
\nParty voters, 24 percent of PDI-P supporters, 40 percent of
\nNational Awakening Party supporters, 34 percent of United
\nDevelopment Party voters and 42.39 percent of Prosperous Justice
\nParty supporters, the LKaDe poll revealed.<\/p>",
