Susilo defends AG against House<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono rejected on
\nWednesday the House of Representatives' demand for him to
\n\"strongly reprimand\" Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh who has
\nhelped jail a number of local councillors for graft.<\/p>\n
As the strong reprimand was interpreted by some legislators as
\n\"dismissal\", State Secretary Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the House
\ncould not force the President to dismiss the chief prosecutor.<\/p>\n
\"The House cannot force the President to do what it wants or
\nvice versa. Each has its own power, one cannot intervene in the
\naffairs of the other,\" Yusril said at the State Palace.<\/p>\n
He said the government would examine and respond to a letter
\nfrom the House requesting the President to rebuke Rahman
\nfollowing a brief commotion in the House last week.<\/p>\n
The rift started after a House member called Rahman a \"Muslim
\nteacher in the village of thieves\", while others accused his
\noffice of being unfair in prosecuting graft cases that mainly
\ntargeted councillors from major parties. --JP<\/p>",
