Susilo calls on nation to exercise restraint<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all groups in the
\ncountry to put their individual interests behind the greater
\ncause of helping the nation.<\/p>\n
In his speech delivered at the commemoration of the Koranic
\nrevelation day at Istiqlal Grand Mosque in Central Jakarta on
\nSaturday, Susilo said people should exercise restraint in their
\nconduct and refrain from imposing their will on others.<\/p>\n
\"I call on all components of the nation to exercise restraint,
\nand in dealing with a myriad of problems I hope they do not
\npursue narrow interests,\" Susilo said.<\/p>\n
Susilo's statement came amid protracted wrangling between
\npolitical blocs in the House of Representatives over control of
\nthe highest lawmaking institution.<\/p>\n
Even though its members were sworn in nearly a month ago, the
\nHouse has barely started substantial work due to a scramble over
\nleadership of its commissions and auxiliary bodies.<\/p>\n
Susilo said that an attitude of self restraint would serve the
\nnation's best interests for now and the future.<\/p>\n
\"I believe that with that kind of attitude, we can develop our
\nnation. Conversely, a failure to do so will push us backwards and
\nwe will be left behind by other nations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The conflict in the House was highlighted by the Nationhood
\nCoalition's clean sweep of the chairmanship of the House
\ncommissions during a plenary which saw factions affiliated with
\nthe pro-Susilo People's Coalition boycott the session.<\/p>\n
The Nationhood Coalition, led by Golkar Party and the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), downplayed a
\nclaim from the People's Coalition that the meeting to decide the
\ncommissions leadership was illegitimate.<\/p>\n
As a result, members of the People's coalition have boycotted
\nall meetings since Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Despite the boycott, the House defense commission and its
\ndisciplinary council have held separate meetings to discuss
\nfuture agenda.<\/p>\n
