Susi chosen best athlete by Gillette<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former world number one women's badminton player
\nSusi Susanti was chosen by the Gillete company Thursday as
\nIndonesia's best athlete.<\/p>\n
Susi beat bodybuilder Ade Rai and tennis player Yayuk Basuki
\nfor the title.<\/p>\n
Susi now carries the honorary title of Gillette World Champion
\nof Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Susi received a plaque and money while Ade and Yayuk received
\ncertificates and money.<\/p>\n
The Gillette World Champions Indonesia award is offered in
\naddition to the Gillette World Champions competition, which is
\nbeing contested by athletes from Brazil, Panama, Turkey, the
\nPhilippines, Canada and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Ade was the only athlete to receive the certificate as Susi
\nand Yayuk were absent.<\/p>\n
Susi was in her home town of Tasikmalaya, West Java, visiting
\na sick friend while Yayuk was competing in the French Open in
\nParis.<\/p>\n
Yayuk is Indonesia's number one women's tennis player. She has
\ncompeted in many international tournaments and is ranked 24th in
\nthe world. She is married to her coach Suharyadi.<\/p>\n
More than half of the 3,000 votes organizers received were for
\nSusi.<\/p>\n
Susi, who recently married Alan Budikusuma, is the 1993 world
\nchampion and a gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.<\/p>\n
Ade said he was not disappointed at not winning.<\/p>\n
\"I am not at all disappointed at not being chosen since the
\nchoice comes from the people,\" he said<\/p>\n
Ade is a bodybuilder who won the 1995 Southeast Asia
\nbodybuilding championship in Singapore. He received the Best of
\nthe Best Muscle Mania award at Redondo Beach, California, in 1996
\nand coaches youth bodybuilders.<\/p>\n
Susi, Ade and Yayuk were selected by the Indonesian
\nSportswriters Association from a list of 12 athletes.<\/p>\n
Susi, Ade and Yayuk all conducted social activities from March
\nto May, including each presenting Rp 5 million from Gillette to
\nsocial foundations.<\/p>\n
Ade presented Rp 5 million to Pamardisiwi, a foundation for
\ndelinquent children and narcotic users, Susi presented Rp 5
\nmillion to the Pondok Si Boncel in Pasar Minggu, a foundation for
\nnursing children and Yayuk presented Rp 5 million to the Darul
\nAitam orphanage in Ciputat.<\/p>\n
Ade visited two high schools and supermarkets at Citraland and
