The General Chairman of the NasDem Party, Surya Paloh, has proposed\nthat the parliamentary threshold (PT) be raised to 7 per cent amidst the\nongoing discussions regarding the figure, which will serve as a basis\nfor the revision of the General Election Law.<\/p>\n
According to him, NasDem\u2019s stance is to encourage an increase in the\nthreshold so that political parties in parliament are better selected to\nensure democratic effectiveness. However, he also ensured that NasDem\nremains open to discussions with other parties to find an ideal\nfigure.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor us, a selected group of parties is clearly more effective for\nour democracy than a multi-party system,\u201d said Surya Paloh after hosting\nthe visit of Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at\nNasDem Tower, Jakarta, on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he expressed that NasDem is willing to propose this\nfigure even though the party\u2019s current survey results are in the 4 per\ncent range.<\/p>\n
Despite the possibility that NasDem might not qualify for Parliament,\nhe stated that the proposal is a form of prioritising national interests\nover party interests.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be honest, that is my wish as the General Chairman of the NasDem\nParty. But whatever the result, the majority vote will decide,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also noted that there is still plenty of time for the discussion\nof the Election Law revision. However, he believes it would be better if\nthe law could be finalised this year, as elections are a strategic\nmatter.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think one of the legislative products we must prioritise is the\nelection law, rather than various other laws,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Previously, several political parties have expressed diverse views\nregarding the proposed parliamentary threshold figure in the Draft\nElection Law (RUU Pemilu).<\/p>\n
The General Secretary of the Gerindra Party, Sugiono, stated that his\nparty agrees with a parliamentary threshold of 5 per cent in the\ndiscussions regarding the revision of the Election Law.<\/p>\n
Similarly, the Chairman of the Honour Committee of the Indonesian\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Komarudin Watubun, stated that a 5\nper cent parliamentary threshold is the ideal figure to achieve the\nsimplification of political parties.<\/p>\n
