Surveyors must anticipate int'l competition<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian surveyor companies must start
\nchanging their working methods if they want to survive
\ninternational competition, an executive of the Association of
\nIndonesian Independent Surveyors (AISI) said yesterday.<\/p>\n
AISI Chairman Moedjiono said here that national surveyor
\ncompanies currently rely too much on the "old" method of checking
\nthe quality of final products, and not enough on conducting
\nquality assurance inspection of all aspects of the production
\nprocess.<\/p>\n
"Right now the world demands quality assurance. People need to
\nknow that whenever and wherever they buy a certain product, they
\ncan expect a standard quality," said Moedjiono, who is also
\npresident of the PT Sucofindo surveyor firm.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the association's general assembly here yesterday,
\nMoedjiono said quality assurance inspections would also be the
\ntrend in the upcoming free trade era, when more countries demand
\nproducts coming from manufacturers with ISO-9000 and ISO-14000
\nquality management and environmental management certificates.<\/p>\n
"Quality assurance is a market-driven international demand
\nwhich every independent surveyor firm should be able to
\naccommodate," Moedjiono told The Jakarta Post. Presently, only 10
\npercent of the 60 independent survey companies registered at the
\nMinistry of Industry and Trade can provide such services, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
As a result, he said, only 130 Indonesian firms currently
\ncarry ISO-9000 quality management certificates. Ideally, 30,000
\nnational firms should be carrying such a certificate.<\/p>\n
Moedjiono said another problem AISI often has to face is
\nensuring that its members abide by the association's code of
\nethics.<\/p>\n
Independent surveyors, he said, should demonstrate high
\nintegrity, reliability and trustworthiness. "The code of ethics
\nmeans fair play. Independent surveyors must not take sides, even
\nif they are paid by clients."<\/p>\n
He said that over the last few years, AISI has had to give
\nwarnings to several members which failed to abide by the
\nassociation's guidelines.<\/p>\n
Moedjiono said AISI members have not standardized their
\nservice fees, but they must observe the association's standard
\nprocedures.<\/p>\n
"Their competitiveness depends totally on their ability to
\nmaximize efficiency and the quality of their work should never
\nfall below standards," he said.<\/p>\n
AISI presently has 44 members which conduct inspections,
\nstudies and analyses on various products, ranging from their size
\nand contents to their packing.<\/p>\n
Their services consist of cargo surveys, which include
\nsampling, quality inspection, cotton inspection and freight
\ncontainer inspections; marine surveys, which include supervision
\nof shipbuilding, hull and engine damage survey and towing
\nsurveys; technical inspections; insurance surveys; quantity
\nsurveys; geography surveys; environmental impact assessments
