Survey finds problem with water<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A survey released on Friday found that almost 20
\npercent of water refill outlets in the city sell water
\ncontaminated with coliform, a bacteria blamed for causing
\ndiarrhea and other health problems.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Communication Forum on Drinking Water Quality
\nManagement surveyed 96 of the 1,200 water refill outlets across
\nthe city in August and September.<\/p>\n
"The water quality is relatively hygienic. However, consumers
\nshould be wary of the level of coliform," forum chairman Abdullah
\nMuthalib said.<\/p>\n
The survey found most outlet operators do not check the
\ncleanliness of their water.<\/p>\n
"They tend to be reckless when handling the equipment used to
\nprocess the water. This poor sanitary is very influential on the
\nquality of the water."<\/p>\n
In April, the state-run Bogor Agriculture Institute released a
\nsurvey that cautioned customers against buying drinking water
\nfrom refill outlets because the water could be contaminated with
\nharmful bacteria.<\/p>\n
It said that 16 percent of 120 samples of drinking water from
\nJakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi and six other major cities in
\nthe country contained coliform bacteria. The samples also had a
\nhigh concentration of chemicals. -- JP<\/p>",
