Surjadi wants gambling stopped<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said all forms of
\ngambling are illegal and must be eliminated.<\/p>\n
Speaking after attending the Youth Pledge Day ceremony at City
\nHall on Saturday, Surjadi said that integrated efforts are needed
\nto eliminate gambling.<\/p>\n
\"The authorities alone will not be able to eliminate gambling.
\nThe public's participation is needed,\" he was quoted by Suara
\nPembaruan evening daily as saying.<\/p>\n
People should report any gambling activities they become aware
\nof to the police.<\/p>\n
Gambling is still popular among Jakarta residents. Many houses
\nand amusement centers on Jl. Manggabesar, Tubagus Angke and in
\nthe Ancol area are used as gambling dens. Reports say that
\ngambling is also done on a regular basis on a cruise ship in
\nJakarta Bay.<\/p>\n
Police have frequently raided gambling dens and arrested
\ngamblers. However, Suara Pembaruan reported that most of the
