Surjadi tells officials not to be arrogant<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja called for his
\nsubordinates to improve their service to the public by stopping
\ntheir self-important and arrogant ways.<\/p>\n
In his speech to council on his administration's
\nresponsibilities at City Council's plenary session yesterday,
\nSurjadi said that City Hall staff were civil servants and must
\nput the public interest's first and; \"Don't show off your wealth
\nand don't enrich yourselves.\"<\/p>\n
He said the City administration was not a scientific body.
\n\"Therefore, don't try to satisfy yourselves with lengthy
\nscientific arguments with the public, because the public just
\nwant service,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said it was also important for City Hall employees to work
\nhard to increase the city's self generated revenue from taxation
\nand other levies.<\/p>\n
\"The City's self-generated revenue is the backbone of its
\ndevelopment. Please try and find the best ways of collecting more
\nrevenue,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said he was optimistic that the administration could
\ncomplete its development programs in the fourth year of the Sixth
\nFive-Year Development Plan that starts today.<\/p>\n
In the 1997\/98 fiscal year the City's development budget is Rp
\n3.2 trillion. Although the amount is far from the ideal (Rp 16
\ntrillion), the governor said he was sure that in the coming years
\nthe development programs would be carried out smoothly as the
\ncity budget was expected to increase by between five and 10
\npercent a year.<\/p>\n
He also said that the professionalism of his subordinates
\nneeded improvement, he said.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Surjadi also said that Jakarta would be
\ndeveloped into a city to rival the other big cities in the world.<\/p>\n
In the 21st century the world would pay more attention to
\nJakarta due to the rapid economic growth in the Asia-Pacific
\nregion, he said.<\/p>\n
