Surjadi seeks more ideas on solving brawls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In the wake of student brawls in which four
\nstudents died this month, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja appealed
\nagain to the public to seek ways together to overcome brawls.<\/p>\n
\"I don't understand (why students join brawls), it's like they
\nhave nothing better to do,\" Surjadi said yesterday in a visit to
\na subdistrict office in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Fighting, hurting others, and this culture of destruction...
\nwhere did they learn that?\" he questioned.<\/p>\n
He said he hoped for positive input from the public, adding
\nthat comments from experts who only blame certain parties such as
\nincapable teachers, does not help.<\/p>\n
Bambang Supriadi, a student of privately run Mercu Suar
\ntechnical senior high school in East Jakarta, died from a stab
\nwound in the chest after he and his friends were attacked Tuesday
\nby students from another privately run technical school in
\nBekasi.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month three other students were killed in
\nseparate brawls in North, West and Central Jakarta. Twelve others
\nhave been killed in brawls in the past six months.<\/p>\n
Now even university students are involved, he said. \"This is
\nreally an unhealthy situation.\"<\/p>\n
Students of the private Trisakti University were involved in
\nbrawls with high school students in Central Jakarta in April.<\/p>\n
Not many students are copying younger ones, he said, but it
\ncould get dangerous if the problem is ignored.<\/p>\n
He said the military schools for delinquent students are still
\neffective, but the public should realize it is everybody's
\nresponsibility to avoid the outbreak of brawls.<\/p>\n
The city has made several attempts to solve the problem, like
\nencouraging students to participate in healthy activities and
\narranging talks between parents and teachers, he said.<\/p>\n
Surjadi further praised the cooperation and hard work of
\nKramat Jati residents which, he said, led to several
\nachievements.<\/p>\n
The subdistrict of 28,129 residents won the first prize for
\nlocal security systems in Greater Jakarta, and came in second in
\na competition among subdistricts held by the city.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said the city will continue to focu{ on programs which
\ndirectly improve people's lives, such as environmental
\nimprovement and setting up small stores in every neighborhood.<\/p>\n
\"Shopping as close as possible to home where things are
\ncheaper will help reduce the number of trips we have to take,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
East Jakarta Mayor Lt. Col. Sudarsono reported that Kramat
\nJati has one cooperative and four small stores. The subdistrict
\nis located near factories and a large shopping center.<\/p>\n
Sudarsono said among 1,459 families categorized as poor in the
\nsubdistrict, 178 families have received financial assistance of
\nRp 40 million. Eventually the others will also get assistance if
