Surjadi checks irregularity reports at bus terminals<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said yesterday he
\nwould impose a penalty on the owner of a bus discovered to have
\nincreased fares more than the regulation set by the government.<\/p>\n
The governor discovered this when he, together with Speaker of
\nthe City Council, M.H. Ritonga, Deputy Governor for Government
\nAffairs Idroes and other city officials, inspected bus terminals
\nand the Senen railways station.<\/p>\n
The city officials, who are members of the council for city
\nadministration, visited Kampung Rambutan and Pulogadung bus
\nterminals in East Jakarta, Pasar Minggu terminal in South Jakarta
\nand an additional terminal owned by state-owned bus company Damri
\nin Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
At Pulogadung bus terminal the governor inspected three buses
\nand spoke with a number of passengers. When he was aboard a
\nHandoyo bus, plying the Jakarta-Central Java route, he discovered
\nthe company had charged people far higher than the regulation
\nallows.<\/p>\n
Passengers told Governor Surjadi they paid Rp 18,000 for a
\nticket to Wonosobo. The price printed on the tickets states the
\nfare as Rp 15,000 per person, while the official price set by the
\ngovernment is Rp 10.500 per person.<\/p>\n
\"This bus has violated the regulation and the company should
\nreimburse the passengers,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
He then ordered the head of the Jakarta Chapter of
\nTransportation Ministry Abdul Karim to report the company to the
\ndirectorate general of the land transportation ministry.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said, however, that the penalty would be handed down
\nto the owner(s) of the bus company after Idul Fitri so as to
\navoid \"unrest\" among both owners of other buses and public
\ntransportation passengers alike during the Moslem holiday.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month the government decided to allow an increase
\nof 25 percent in fares in an effort to avoid illegal hikes of
\nticket fares set by bus companies or the drivers.<\/p>\n
In Pasar Minggu bus terminal Governor Surjadi also found a bus
\ncompany violating the regulation by overcharging.<\/p>\n
However, in general, both in Pulogadung and Kampung Rambutan
\nbus terminals, the governor said most bus companies have obeyed
\nthe regulation.<\/p>\n
During his inspection at the Damri station in Kemayoran,
\nCentral Jakarta, governor Surjadi discovered many people standing
\nin long queues in the sun to buy tickets, while none of the five
\nticket counters in the terminal were opened.<\/p>\n
\"Open the counters because people are waiting in the sun for
\nhours. And why are the counters closed? Reports state that
\neverything is under control and all counters are ready to serve
\npassengers,\" Surjadi said angrily.<\/p>\n
Head of City Land Transportation Control Agency J.P. Sepang
\nsaid during the inspection that of 1,050 additional buses
\nprovided by the government, only 148 have been used because there
\nwas no passenger \"explosion\" in terminals.<\/p>\n
\"Many people decided to go home long before Idul Fitri, and
\nthere are companies that provide transportation for their
\nemployees,\" Sepang said.(yns)<\/p>",
