Surjadi asks for efficient water use for draught<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soerdirdja called on Jakartans
\nto use water efficiently due to the ongoing drought which has dug
\ndeep into the city's water reserves.<\/p>\n
"I urge households not to use too much detergent when doing
\nwashing and dump waste water directly to the rivers in order not
\nto pollute the water supply. Industries should also install water
\ntreatment plants," Surjadi said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The governor was referring to recent newspaper reports that
\nthousands of Jakartans did not receive piped water from the city-
\nowned water company, PAM Jaya, because of shortages.<\/p>\n
Reports also said that thousands of Jakartans, who rely on
\ngroundwater, have to wait until late at night, sometimes till
\nearly morning, for water to accumulate because their deep wells
\nhave dried out.<\/p>\n
PAM Jaya, Surjadi said, had done its best to meet the demand
\nof residents for water.<\/p>\n
"They installed longer pipes and distributed more water. But
\nit could not match the city's high population growth," he said,
\ndescribing the effort as a drop of water in a frying pan.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Agriculture estimated that 1994 would be one
\nof the most serious drought-stricken years of the last decade.<\/p>\n
On urbanization, Surjadi said that high population growth in
\nthe city creates not only water shortages but also an undersupply
\nof transportation, housing, garbage, electricity and telephone
\nlines.<\/p>\n
But he said that urbanization problems plaguing big cities
\nlike Jakarta should be taken as a conditio sine qua non.<\/p>\n
"What we can do is reduce the impact of the urbanization as
\nsmall as possible because we cannot ban people from coming to the
\ncity," he said.<\/p>\n
"I believe the city administration can do this with the help
\nof its residents," he stressed. (09)<\/p>",
