Venetiaan is scheduled <br>\nto make a state visit to Indonesia beginning today.<\/p>\n<p>Venetiaan will be accompanied by his wife, at least four <br>\ncabinet ministers and a host of entrepreneurs during the four-day <br>\nvisit, the first ever by a Suriname president, according to a <br>\nstatement by Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia and Suriname are bound by tradition for they were <br>\nboth colonies of the Netherlands at one time and many <br>\nIndonesians, particularly Javanese, were shipped there as <br>\nplantation workers during the Dutch colonial era.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the descendants of the Javanese make up about 15 percent <br>\nof the 413,000 Suriname population.<\/p>\n<p>Venetiaan will also be traveling to Bandung and Yogyakarta <br>\nduring his stay in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>A new trade cooperation agreement will also be signed by the <br>\nforeign ministers of the two countries during his stay.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia and Suriname have had diplomatic relations, <br>\ninitially at consulate general level since 1964 and elevated to <br>\nembassy after Suriname became fully independent in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Suriname is also a member of the Non-Aligned Movement which is <br>\ncurrently chaired by Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries signed a technical cooperation agreement in <br>\n1990 and an economic and technical agreement in 1992. Trade <br>\nbetween them amounts to a meager $1.9 million a year, with <br>\nIndonesia, which exports textiles, garments and handicrafts, <br>\nrunning a surplus. (emb)<\/p>",
