Surgical separation considered for twins<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: Doctors here are considering at length the
\npossibility of separating a pair of twins joined at the chest and
\nstomach.<\/p>\n
They say the twins, who were born on Saturday to a poor family
\nin the East Java capital of Surabaya, share two legs, one sex
\norgan and have no anus.<\/p>\n
But doctors are weighing up the dangers of surgery to separate
\nthem.<\/p>\n
\"It is very dangerous to operate on them. The most important
\nthing at the moment is that the babies survive,\" Dr. Oerip
\nMoetedjo, a spokesman from Dr. Soetomo Hospital, was quoted as
\nsaying by Antara on Sunday.
\n\"They were born prematurely and their irregularities are very
\nrare. It is extremely difficult (to separate them).\"<\/p>\n
The twins, whose sex was not given, are two of three babies
\nborn on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The other baby was born without any complications.<\/p>\n
On Thursday a two-week-old pair of conjoined twin boys died of
\ncomplications six weeks ahead of a planned separation surgery in
\nBandung, West Java. The twins were born with fused lower bodies.
