        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 The Directorate of Registration and Identification\n(Ditregident) of the National Traffic Police (Korlantas Polri) has\nwarned the public about the dangers of illegally-documented or\ncounterfeit vehicles following a surge in cases of forged vehicle\nregistration documents (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan\/STNK) and vehicle\nownership certificates (Buku Pemilik Kendaraan Bermotor\/BPKB) across\nvarious regions.<\/p>\n<p>Brigadier General Wibowo, Director of Regident at Korlantas Polri,\nurged the public to exercise greater caution and diligence when\npurchasing second-hand vehicles. \u201cEnsure that vehicle documents such as\nSTNK and BPKB are genuinely authentic by having them checked at a Samsat\noffice or through available official services,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Wibowo emphasised that the forgery of vehicle documents is a serious\ncriminal offence that can cause material and legal harm to the public.\nHe advised citizens to familiarise themselves with the distinguishing\ncharacteristics of authentic and forged vehicle documents.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wibowo, authentic BPKB holograms are grey in colour and\ndo not change appearance when viewed against light, whereas forged\ndocuments typically turn yellowish. The paper of authentic documents is\nalso thicker and of higher quality, whilst forged documents are\ngenerally thin with blurred printing.<\/p>\n<p>Authentic STNK and BPKB documents feature scannable barcodes that are\nlinked to the police data system. The Police emblem on authentic\ndocuments also feels raised when touched and is clearly visible under\nultraviolet light, whereas forged documents typically lack these\nfeatures or they do not function.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent becoming a victim of such crime, Wibowo recommended that\nthe public take several preventive steps before purchasing second-hand\nvehicles. These include conducting a physical vehicle check at the\nnearest Samsat office through the official vehicle inspection assistance\nservice, verifying document authenticity through the Samsat application\nor official online services, and being cautious of vehicles offered at\nprices significantly below market rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConduct a direct check at Samsat to ensure the authenticity of\ndocuments and vehicle identity.
