In Solo city, the celebration of Lailatul Qadar is traditionally held\nat the Kasunanan Palace of Solo or Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace. This\ntradition, known as Malam Selikuran, features a procession of 1,000\ntumpeng on 20 Ramadan, Monday evening (9 March). The Malam Selikuran or\nTumpeng Sewu tradition is traditionally held in two versions.<\/p>\n
This year, the Malam Selikuran ceremony is organised by the faction\nof Sinuhun Pakoe Boewono XIV (Purbaya) and PB Hangabehi (Palace\nCustomary Council Institution\/LDA).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe traditional ceremony welcomes the descent of divine revelation\nof Lailatul Qadar, received by Prophet Muhammad. This Malam Selikuran\ntradition has existed since the era of the Demak Palace or Sunan\nKalijaga,\u201d said Kanjeng Pangeran Eddy Wirabhumi, Chairman of the Legal\nInstitution of the Customary Council at the Kasunanan Palace, to Media\nIndonesia on Monday afternoon (9 March).<\/p>\n
The Malam Selikuran tradition forms part of efforts to spread Islam\nin Java and continued during the Islamic Mataram kingdom, under Sultan\nAgung, and has been preserved to the present day. The tradition, in the\nform of tumpeng sewu, is paraded with ting lamps and lanterns as symbols\nof the Lailatul Qadar night.<\/p>\n
According to him, tumpeng sewu can also be interpreted as the concept\nof a king sharing fortune with society. The distribution of rice tumpeng\nthat has been blessed at the Grand Mosque of Surakarta Palace represents\nthe king\u2019s attention to his people.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndeed, there are many philosophies contained in each portion of\nblessed rice distributed. All of it can be understood as gratitude for\nthe blessings given by God Almighty,\u201d said the husband of the head of\nthe LDA, GRAy Koes Murtiyah.<\/p>\n
During the periods of PB X to PB XII, the tumpeng sewu tradition\nduring selikuran night was paraded from the palace to the Kapujanggan\npavilion in Taman Sriwedari. However, over time, the procession has also\nbeen conducted from the Grand Mosque of the Kasunanan Palace.<\/p>\n
Wirabhumi added that in the selikuran night celebration tradition,\nanyone is permitted to perform the customary ceremony.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe more who participate or celebrate, the better,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The selikuran night tradition held by the Palace Customary Council,\nwhich is a faction of Sinuhun PB XIV Hangabehi on Monday evening (9\nMarch 2026), will be accompanied by hadrah performances circling the\nBaluwarti before proceeding to the Grand Mosque. There will also be\ntorches carried by 1,000 palace servants and soldiers together with\nSolo\u2019s residents, which always receives significant public attention, as\nin previous years.<\/p>\n
