'Surabaya garbage a serious problem'<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: Minister of Environment Nabiel Makarim
\nsaid the accumulating garbage in the city was a serious problem
\nthat had to be resolved immediately.<\/p>\n
"The accumulation of garbage in temporary dump sites in the
\ncity could be a serious disaster to residents unless the problem
\nis solved immediately," the visiting minister said here on
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
He called on the city administration to make a peaceful and
\nfair negotiation with residents in Keputih and Benowo so the
\ngarbage could be dumped in the subdistricts.<\/p>\n
He admitted to having received many reports from residents
\nconcerning the garbage "and that is why we ask the city
\nadministration to seek a comprehensive solution to the garbage
\nproblem".<\/p>\n
Nabiel said he hoped the problems could be solved in the next
\ntwo weeks so that residents could enjoy the Idhul Fitri holidays.<\/p>\n
The minister, accompanied by Governor Imam Utomo, Deputy
\nSurabaya Mayor Bambang and the chairman of the Surabaya
\nlegislative council, held talks with residents of the Keputih
\nsubdistrict to hear their complaints on the garbage dump in the
