Supreme Court defends corruption probe result<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Secretary-general of the Supreme Court Toton
\nSuprapto declared yesterday once and for all that the case of
\ncollusion charges brought against the Court by Justice Adi Andojo
\nSoetjipto was closed.<\/p>\n
He defended the conclusion of the special investigation team,
\nwhich found no evidence to back Adi's claim that Court members
\nhad accepted bribes to acquit a defendant.<\/p>\n
\"There will be no reinvestigation on the alleged collusion at
\nthe Supreme Court. It's impossible ... The findings of the
\nSupreme Court's internal supervision team are final,\" Toton said
\nin a press conference yesterday.<\/p>\n
Chief Justice Soerjono, after evaluating the report from the
\nCourt's Internal Supervision Team, announced on June 10 that the
\nteam assigned to probe the alleged collusion found no evidence to
\nsupport the claim that members of the Supreme Court accepted
\nbribes to acquit Ram Gulumal, the Gandhi Memorial School
\nprincipal, from document fraud charges.<\/p>\n
The report concluded that what really occurred was a
\n\"violation of procedure\" in the way that the Gandhi Seva Loka vs.
\nRam Gulumal case was parceled out to the panel of justices in the
\nSupreme Court.<\/p>\n
The alleged collusion became public in April when a local
\nmagazine revealed a confidential letter written by Adi, who is
\nDeputy Chief Justice for General Crimes, requesting the Central
\nJakarta Prosecutor's Office to push for a retrial after the
\nacquittal of Gulumal.<\/p>\n
Adi backed his allegations with the fact that the Supreme
\nCourt's Director for General Crimes, Sujatmi Soedarmoko, had
\narranged to have the case processed by Group D of senior judges
\nunder presiding Justice Samsoedin Aboebakar, instead of Group H.<\/p>\n
Adi had written a letter to the coordinator of the Supreme
\nCourt's Internal Supervision Team to launch a new investigation
\ninto the alleged collusion.<\/p>\n
Toton said that he had rechecked with both Soerjono and the
\nteam coordinator Sarwata regarding the alleged collusion.<\/p>\n
\"Both Soerjono and Sarwata told me that no collusion was
\nfound,\" he said.<\/p>\n
However, he would not say whether he had personally read the
\ninvestigation results. Adi has never been given the opportunity
\nto study the results.<\/p>\n
Toton denied speculation that Adi would be fired from the
\nSupreme Court because of his comments to the press about the
\nteam's conclusion.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know about it. The issue has not been discussed,
\neither,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Separately, Adi said that the Supreme Court would not dismiss
\nhim from his position, as there is no mechanism to dismiss a
\njustice mentioned in Law No. 14\/1985 on the Supreme Court. (imn)<\/p>",
