Supreme Court clears 659 cases<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Supreme Court, swamped by a huge backlog of
\nlitigation cases, heard 659 cases in April despite being
\nunderstaffed.<\/p>\n
Chief Justice Sarwata told a press conference yesterday he was
\nhopeful the number of cases completed by the Supreme Court's 17
\njudges will reach 700 for May.<\/p>\n
He was quoted by Antara as saying the justices' performance
\nwas quite a feat for the Court which is short of 10 justices.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court, which usually has 51 justices, will install
\n10 new justices this morning to replace those who retired or
\npassed away.<\/p>\n
\"When we are again fully-manned, we can expect to finish the
\nremaining 17,599 back cases soon,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added that each panel of justices is meant to discuss and
\nfinish at least 50 cases per day or 1,000 every month.<\/p>\n
He promised the Court will not sacrifice quality over
\nquantity.<\/p>\n
\"Speeding up the processing of the back cases does not mean
\nthe Court will be careless,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"We'll maintain the quality of the legal process.\"<\/p>\n
He estimated the Supreme Court will be able to clear the
\nbacklog by the year 2000. Afterward, the current number of 51
\njustices can cope with the usual load of 1,500 cases annually.<\/p>\n
Four justices will also be installed as deputy chief justices
\nby President Soeharto. Sarwata did not say when.<\/p>\n
The 1997 presidential decrees 100\/M, 106\/M and 124\/M, name M.
\nYahya Harahap as the new Deputy Chief Justice for General Crimes,
\nreplacing Adi Andojo Sutjipto; Maj. Gen. German Hoediarto as
\nDeputy Chief Justice for Military Tribunal replacing Sarwata; H.
\nZakir as Deputy Chief Justice for State Administrative courts
\nreplacing Th. Ketut Suraputra; and M. Syafiuddin Kartasasmita as
\nDeputy Chief Justice for Traditional\/Civil Court replacing Palti
\nRaja Siregar who retired.<\/p>\n
The 10 new justices to be sworn in this morning are: Emin
\nAminah Achdiat, I Nengah Wedastra, Mangatas Nasution, Marnis
\nKahar, R. Sunu Wahadi, Soekirno, Soenardi Padang, Sudarno,
\nSuwawai and Zainal Abidin Abubakar. (swe)<\/p>",
