JAKARTA - The General Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce\nand Industry (Kadin), Anindya Novyan Bakrie, has emphasised the business\ncommunity\u2019s commitment to supporting the Indonesian government\u2019s\nambition to become a member of the Organisation for Economic\nCo-operation and Development (OECD). This step is regarded as strategic\namid global geopolitical dynamics to ensure that national economic\ngrowth remains on the right track.<\/p>\n
According to Anindya, the effort to join this \u201cclub of advanced\ncountries\u201d is part of a grand vision to achieve the 8% economic growth\ntarget set by President Prabowo Subianto. He stressed that OECD\naccession is a key to ushering in the Golden Indonesia 2045 era.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday is a very good day, amid much dynamism in the Middle East and\nwars, we see that Indonesia\u2019s ambition to become an OECD member remains\nstrong. Earlier, the Coordinating Minister was also present to state\nthat Indonesia is on the right track,\u201d said Anindya when met at the\nIndonesia OECD Accession and Private Sector Implication event at the\nGran Melia Hotel, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
International support for Indonesia\u2019s steps continues to flow,\nincluding from the Government of the United Kingdom. Anindya appreciated\nthe presence of the British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste,\nDominic Jermey, who openly expressed his support for the private\nsector\u2019s role in this accession process.<\/p>\n
Anindya explained that this collaboration was actually initiated\nseveral months ago. He recalled how this strategic cooperation began to\ntake shape in London, involving global consultants to formulate\ntechnical steps for the business world.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I thank the Ambassador for his support. I remember three months\nago in London it started with support through a company called BCG,\nBoston Consulting Group, as a consultant, but essentially how the\nbusiness world and government, assisted by friends from other countries\nlike the UK, can make Indonesia an advanced country and escape the\nmiddle-income trap,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
Kadin\u2019s involvement in this process is described as a collective\nrepresentation of all business actors in the country. Anindya assured\nthat the spirit to bring Indonesia out of the middle-income trap has\nspread to the regional level.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd finally, what I conveyed is that Kadin had many friends present,\nof course Mr Erwin Aksa is here, but also friends from provincial Kadin.\nSo saying that the effort to become an OECD member or an advanced\ncountry is not just a government effort, not just the business world in\nIndonesia, but for the entire nation, and we are helped by friends who\nbelieve that an advanced Indonesia can bring growth to the world,\u201d\nAnindya emphasised.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, the British Ambassador to Indonesia and\nTimor-Leste, Dominic Jermey, welcomed this vision. He linked this\ncooperation to the high-level meeting between President Prabowo and\nBritish Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who had agreed on a strategic\npartnership in the economic field.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you very much. When President Prabowo met Prime Minister\nStarmer in the UK in January and launched a strategic partnership with\nthe UK for Indonesia, part of that was about economic growth. And part\nof economic growth in Indonesia is about improving regulations,\ninvolving the private sector from both our countries, and OECD accession\nis a very important element of that vision,\u201d Jermey stated.<\/p>\n
Based on the UK\u2019s experience, Jermey explained that OECD membership\nhas proven capable of improving the investment climate through more\ncertain regulations. It is this legal and regulatory certainty that is\ngreatly needed by global business actors to invest their capital.<\/p>\n
