Supporting increasing array of enduring ties<\/p>\n
Encouraging and supporting an ever increasing array of
\nenduring links between Australia and Indonesia is a key function
\nof the Australia-Indonesia Institute.<\/p>\n
Established by the Australian government in April 1989 to
\npromote mutual understanding through interpersonal and
\ninstitutional links with Indonesia, the institute funds an
\nincreasingly diverse range of projects including in civil
\nsociety, commerce, technology, education, sport, media and the
\narts.<\/p>\n
The institute's regular activities include scholarships and
\nexchange programs for Australian teachers, students and
\njournalists to travel to Indonesia to learn the language and
\nexperience Indonesian culture, as well as senior editors'
\nmeetings to develop dialogue between Indonesian and Australian
\neditors on the political and economic issues of both countries.<\/p>\n
Support is also provided for Australian studies in Indonesia,
\nand a range of performing and visual arts projects.<\/p>\n
Since August 1998, the institute has developed a program of
\nassistance to strengthen Indonesia's emerging civil society, with
\nprojects targeting women's groups, legal aid and law reform, the
\nenvironment, electoral reform and cooperatives, and the
\nimplementation of a human rights treaty.<\/p>\n
Training for Indonesian individuals and groups provides
\nspecialist advice and supports institution building.<\/p>\n
At its most recent meeting in November last year, the
\ninstitute's Board considered a total of 21 proposals, amounting
\nto almost A$1.2 million in requested funding.<\/p>\n
Of these proposals, approval was given for a range of
\ninnovative projects, each with the potential to strengthen ties
\nbetween Indonesia and Australia.<\/p>\n
Among them a two-day conference at Macquarie University in
\nSydney on developing and implementing autonomy in the Indonesian
\nand Australian education systems, and funding for the National
\nAboriginal and Islander Dance College to invite two Indonesian
\ndancers to perform with the college in Sydney.<\/p>\n
Through support for these and other initiatives across the
\nbroad spectrum of culture and society, the institute continues to
\nhelp build people-to-people contacts and to create opportunities
\nfor better understanding between Australians and Indonesians.<\/p>",
