Ahead of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia\u2019s\nindependence, a historic milestone has been established in North\nAmerica. The Al-Ikhlas Centre, the first mosque initiated by the\nIndonesian community in Western Canada, was officially inaugurated on\nSaturday (1\/8\/2026) local time, symbolising that the spirit of mutual\ncooperation, waqf, and Islamic outreach can transcend national borders\nand deliver benefits to the global community.<\/p>\n
The mosque was realised through the initiative of the Indonesian\nMuslim Community in Edmonton (IMCE), fully supported by a collaborative\nwaqf movement pioneered by the Cinta Quran Foundation. Through the\ncollective efforts of more than 200,000 donors from Indonesia and\nvarious countries, along with support from influencers, fundraising\npartners, the diaspora community, and corporations, funds totalling CAD\n1,140,446.09, or approximately Rp 14.6 billion, were raised to establish\nthis centre for worship and community development.<\/p>\n
The inauguration was conducted by the Consul General of the Republic\nof Indonesia in Vancouver, Nina Kurnia Widhi, alongside Cinta Quran\nFoundation Advisory Board member Ustadz Fatih Karim, IMCE\nadministrators, and Indonesian public figures Nikita Willy and Indra\nPriawan. This event marked the culmination of a series of Indonesian\nIslamic outreach roadshows that visited six major cities in Canada,\nculminating in the establishment of the Al-Ikhlas Centre.<\/p>\n
\u201cInaugurating the Al-Ikhlas Centre is a source of pride and a deeply\nmeaningful moment. I witnessed the journey of this mosque from the early\nstages of construction until it stands beautifully today. The Al-Ikhlas Centre becomes the third mosque abroad to be realised\nby the Cinta Quran Foundation, following similar projects in Japan and\nAustralia. Its presence marks the establishment of three Indonesian\nmosques across three different countries and continents, reaffirming\nthat Indonesian waqf initiatives can make a tangible contribution to\nMuslim communities worldwide.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we are not merely inaugurating a building, but inaugurating\nhope. The Al-Ikhlas Centre is proof that when the community unites,\nnational borders are no barrier to delivering benefit. Waqf does not\nonly build mosques, but builds a civilisation that will continue to\nchannel goodness across generations,\u201d stated Ustadz Fatih Karim.<\/p>\n
More than just a place of worship, the Al-Ikhlas Centre is set to be\ndeveloped as the first Indonesian Islamic Centre in Western Canada. With\na capacity of around 100 worshippers, the centre will provide a space\nfor Quranic learning, family development, youth empowerment, social\nservices, community empowerment, and cross-cultural dialogue to\nstrengthen harmony within Canada\u2019s multicultural society.<\/p>\n
Public figures Nikita Willy and Indra Priawan, who participated in\nthe entire Canadian roadshow, expressed their hopes that the mosque\nwould become a home that strengthens the community. \u201cWe hope the\nAl-Ikhlas Centre becomes a place where brotherhood grows, a space for\neveryone to find peace, and a centre that gives rise to an increasingly\nstrong Muslim community that supports one another and continues to bring\nbenefits to the surrounding society,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n
The inauguration of the Al-Ikhlas Centre is not the end of a\nstruggle, but the beginning of a greater endeavour. Following the\nsuccessful establishment of the first Indonesian mosque in Western\nCanada, the Cinta Quran Foundation plans to continue developing the area\nby acquiring adjacent property to build the first Indonesian Islamic\nCentre in the region.
