Support in sight for Natuna province<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: The House of Representatives is set to
\nsupport the establishment of a separate province on Natuna and
\nAnambas islands, a legislator claims.<\/p>\n
Hamdan Zoelva of House Commission II on domestic and legal
\naffairs said on Sunday the legislative body would welcome the
\nplan as long as it followed proper procedures.<\/p>\n
\"A proposal to create a separate province is OK. Controversy
\nis not the core issue, so just go ahead with the plan,\" Hamdan
\ntold a seminar here on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Talks of plans to set up a province on Natuna have been
\nintensifying after people on the natural gas-rich island rejected
\na law that established Riau islands as a separate province from
\nthe mainland. The proposed new province, will the 31st in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri endorsed last week the law to
\nestablish Riau islands although the regional legislature in Riau
\nhas not agreed to the plan.<\/p>\n
Hamdan suggested that Natuna Legislative Council demand a
\nrevision to the law as a condition for its proposal to form a
\nseparate province.<\/p>\n
A member of Riau Regional Autonomy Council, Tabrani Rab, threw
\nhis weight behind the formation of Natuna-Anambas province,
\nsaying the islands deserved the status due to their natural
\nresources and strategic geographical location. -- JP<\/p>",
