Support grows for nonindigenous ministers<\/p>\n
SEMARANG (JP): Support is growing among scholars for the
\nrecent suggestion that nonindigenous Indonesians be included in
\nthe next cabinet.<\/p>\n
Muladi of the National Commission on Human Rights said Tuesday
\nthat, while this was \"no problem,\" only the president could
\ndecide the cabinet lineup.<\/p>\n
\"There's no law that says that cabinet ministers have to be
\nindigenous Indonesians,\" said Muladi, also rector of Diponegoro
\nUniversity.<\/p>\n
Nonindigenous usually means Indonesians of Chinese descent, a
\nminority but economically powerful ethnic group.<\/p>\n
\"In this era of globalization, what is important is that the
\nministers, be they indigenous or nonindigenous Indonesians, must
\nbe people of good quality,\" Muladi said.<\/p>\n
Political analyst Susilo Utomo of Diponegoro University agreed
\nwith Muladi. He said yesterday that indigenous or nonindigenous
\nIndonesians had the same opportunity for inclusion in the next
\ncabinet.<\/p>\n
He said the 1945 Constitution did not refer to the ethnicity
\nof cabinet ministers, and that people were usually given
\nportfolios because they were trusted and approved by the
\nPresident.<\/p>\n
Susilo cited several people of Chinese descent who would be
\ncapable cabinet ministers, including Kwik Kian Gie of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party, Christianto Wibisono who heads the
\nIndonesian Center of Business Data, and tycoon Anthony Salim.<\/p>\n
\"I hope that in the next cabinet there will be at least one
\nminister from a non-indigenous group,\" he said. (har\/05)<\/p>",
