Suppliers of marijuana extend business in town<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police say that a number of large-scale
\nsuppliers of marijuana brought in from the northern tip of
\nSumatra are significantly expanding their distribution networks
\nin Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Based on all data available, we have concluded that the
\nlarge-scale agents are further extending their networks and sales
\nof the contraband in the city,\" a reliable source at the drugs
\nunit at city police headquarters told The Jakarta Post over the
\nweekend.<\/p>\n
According to the source, who asked not to be identified, city
\npolice are currently collecting valuable information from the
\npublic in order to get more accurate data about the marijuana
\nsuppliers.<\/p>\n
\"With strong support and cooperation from the public, we vow
\nwe will nab all of the suspects and confiscate material evidence
\nin the next few weeks,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Over the last few days, the city police drug units have
\nsuccessfully arrested at least seven suspects with a total of
\n14.7 kilograms of dried marijuana in their possession during
\nthree different raids in East, South and West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
All of the suspects have been tight-lipped and refused to
\nreveal the identities of their bosses and their networks.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman, Lt. Col. Bambang Permantoro, said the
\nseven suspects are currently under intensive investigation.<\/p>\n
Most of the dried marijuana leaves available in the city are
\nbrought in from Aceh through land and air transportation.<\/p>\n
Police sources say that the contraband is mostly consumed by
\nstudents in the city. Richer people normally use more expensive
\naddictive drugs.<\/p>\n
\"We've learned that there are a number of well-organized
\nmarijuana syndicates now running their businesses in the city.
\nThis means that we have to step up our vigilance before planning
\nmore raids,\" the sources said.<\/p>\n
