Supermarkets in regencies<\/p>\n
We would like to thank you for your recent coverage of our
\ncompany (April 28, 1997) under the title, Matahari to open
\noutlets in six regencies.<\/p>\n
However, in our opinion, the article contained some misleading
\nparts which have created a negative image of Matahari. In order
\nto avoid potential misperception among your readers, we would
\nlike to give the following comments.<\/p>\n
Consistent with our corporate long-term expansion plan, we
\nhave decided to expand geographically to areas which provide good
\nmarket potential. As we grow, it is important for us to grow
\ntogether with the society we are operating in. As a result, we
\nhave developed extensive networks and ventures with local
\ncooperatives and small local businesses as our suppliers.<\/p>\n
PT Matahari Putra Prima's decision to open up seven stores in
\n1997 was made long before the government's recent regency
\nregulation. When this decision was made, we had committed
\nsubstantial investment, not only in capital, but more importantly
\nin our most important asset: human resources.<\/p>\n
This fact is very different from the article, which said that
\nPT Matahari Putra Prima will open new stores in the regency
\ndespite government's restriction on large scale retailers to open
\nup new stores in regencies. This is simply not true.<\/p>\n
Our company is supportive of the new government regulation,
\nbecause we believe that government's main intention is to make
\nthe retailing sector vibrant for small and medium businesses, as
\nwell as big scale players. This is in anticipation of economic
\nfree trade in the very near future.<\/p>\n
