Sumitro to get doctoral degree<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Erasmus University of Rotterdam in the
\nNetherlands will award an honorary doctoral degree in November to
\na senior Indonesian economist, Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, for his
\ndistinguished contribution to economics.<\/p>\n
Mohammad Sadli, an economist and a former minister of mines
\nand energy, said yesterday that according to a statement sent to
\nhim by professor Sijbren Cnossen of the university's school of
\neconomics, the honorary degree will be awarded during the
\nuniversity's anniversary in Rotterdam on Nov. 8.<\/p>\n
Sadli said that Sumitro's contributions to economics in the
\nform of books and articles -- written both in English and in
\nIndonesian -- have been appraised by Erasmus University as having
\na high standard of scientific analysis.<\/p>\n
Last year, Sumitro finished a book called The Evolution of
\nEconomic Thoughts.<\/p>\n
Sumitro, born on May 29, 1917, held two ministerial posts
\nunder late president Sukarno -- minister of industry and trade
\nand minister of finance -- and two ministerial posts under
\nSoeharto -- minister of trade and state minister of research and
\ntechnology.<\/p>\n
Sumitro, who has been labeled the \"guru of Indonesian
\neconomics\", acquired his economics degree from the Netherlands
\nEconomics Institute in 1943 and began his teaching career at the
\nUniversity Indonesia soon after.<\/p>\n
Besides being a member of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences,
\nhe is also an honorary professor in economics at the University
\nof Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Sumitro was a member of the Indonesian delegation to the Round
\nTable Conference in The Haag in 1947, which produced an agreement
\non the withdrawal of Dutch colonial rule from Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Sumitro is the founder of the Association of Indonesian
\nEconomists. He is known as an impartial and independent thinker,
\naccording to the statement from the Erasmus University of
