Jarot said illegal mining involved more than licensing and\nadministrative issues, also posing risks to public safety and the\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
He said the local government did not intend to deprive residents of\ntheir livelihoods. However, all mining must comply with the law, hold\nvalid permits, meet safety standards and protect the environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cResidents may earn a living, but not in ways that endanger\nthemselves or others. Mining must be legal, safe and responsible,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
To ensure the halt is sustained, Jarot urged subdistrict and village\nauthorities, security personnel and local residents to strengthen\nmonitoring of the area.<\/p>\n
He warned that mining activities must not merely stop temporarily and\nthen resume secretly once the situation is deemed safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur natural resources must be managed to benefit the community. But\nthey must be managed legally, safely, orderly and responsibly. Profit\nmust never come at the cost of lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The district head was accompanied by Sumbawa\u2019s regional secretary,\nthe first and third deputy speakers of the Sumbawa legislative council,\nand the head of the Protocol and Leadership Communications Division.<\/p>\n
The mining accident in Lawang Tuwa occurred Saturday (September 5) at\nabout 9:30 p.m. local time when rocks and soil collapsed onto miners\ncollecting material below a cliff.<\/p>\n
The material reportedly collapsed after mining activity above the\ncliff dislodged or pried loose rocks, causing them to fall onto miners\nworking below.<\/p>\n
Of the nine victims, one died at the scene and two died while\nreceiving medical treatment at Lantung Community Health Center. The\nother six suffered injuries.<\/p>\n
Police are investigating the cause of the accident by examining the\nscene and questioning several witnesses.<\/p>\n
Police also cordoned off the site to secure the area and support the\ninvestigation. Several pieces of mining equipment and heavy machinery at\nthe site were secured.<\/p>\n
The regent had previously ordered mining operations without People\u2019s\nMining Permits (IPR) to stop. The Sumbawa district government also\ncoordinated with West Nusa Tenggara authorities, which oversee mining\npermits.<\/p>\n
