Sumatran tiger population drops<\/p>\n
BANDAR LAMPUNG: The population of Sumatran tigers (Panthera
\ntrigris sumatrensis) in its natural habitat in the Way Kambas
\nNational Park in East Lampung is estimated at only 50, said the
\nhead of the park, Bintoro.<\/p>\n
Bintoro said that the limited number of the endangered tiger
\nhad forced his office to strive harder to safeguard it against
\nany threat, including human encroachment on its habitat.<\/p>\n
\"The tiger constitutes one of the endangered species, which
\nhave to be tightly protected at the Way Kambas National Park,\" he
\nsaid without giving details.<\/p>\n
Bintoro acknowledged that it was a heavy burden to protect the
\n125,600-hectare park, in which poaching and illegal tree felling
\nwere common.<\/p>\n
\"Besides arresting illegal hunters, we have also prevented
\nforest destruction in the area,\" he said, adding that this year
\nalone his office had nabbed and processed 12 people suspected of
\nstealing logs in the park.<\/p>\n
Bintoro also expressed concern over rampant hunting, which was
\nalso practiced by military personnel as was uncovered recently.<\/p>\n
A group of hunters was arrested last month for killing deer,
